Position Overview
We are currently seeking candidates for the role of Financial Analyst.

The Financial Analyst will be an integral part of the finance teams within Student Unions & Activities (SUA) and University Recreation and Wellness (RecWell), reporting directly to the Finance Manager 2 (FM2) for Student Affairs.

This role is essential in ensuring that precise and timely financial data is provided to unit leadership by collecting, interpreting, and analyzing information from various sources.

The responsibilities of this position encompass both sponsored and non-sponsored financial management tasks, with a focus on budgeting, reporting, forecasting, transaction support and approval, as well as reconciliation.

This role will also contribute to the team's grant support and certified approval workgroup.

Salary Range:
$86,000 - $90,000

Key Responsibilities
Unit Financial Activity Management - 40%

Facilitate regular meetings with unit leaders and project partners to assess financial outcomes, provide variance analysis against the budget, and proactively identify risks and opportunities.

Implement strategies for budget planning, financial modeling, and resource allocation for the units.
Consult and provide training on accounting standards, internal controls, and university policies to managers and administrative staff. Educate others on allowable expenses and best practices.
Review and authorize financial documents (e.g., requisitions, vouchers, reimbursements, purchasing cards, and journal entries) considering fund availability and budget plans for assigned units.
Reconcile monthly financial activities for assigned units.
Manage funding within designated Foundation Funds.
Communicate with supervisors and unit leadership regarding potential deficits.
Interpret and apply financial policies to support unit programming.
Track commitments and analyze various leadership initiative accounts for assigned units.
Coordinate fund transfers across the University system to meet unit commitments.
Serve as the department card administrator for purchasing and travel cards.
Oversee the Delegations of Authority process for SUA and RecWell.

Annual Budget Process Management - 30%

In collaboration with the FM2, coordinate the budget process for SUA and RecWell, which includes engaging with unit leaders to shape budget submissions, suggesting reallocations, interpreting budget instructions, and providing financial analysis to guide the budget process.

Coordinate the budget entry process for assigned units.
Interpret budget instructions for units.
Set and monitor internal deadlines.
Manage and review budget entries for accuracy and structure.
Develop and balance multiple unit budgets.
Submit final and balanced budgets to the FM2.
Implement year-end closeout procedures for operational budgets.

Team Management - 20%

Oversee a team of finance professionals responsible for financial management, preparation of financial statements, financial reporting, coordinating year-end activities, and managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, procurement activities, and fiscal year-end processes.

Determine workload and unit assignments for finance professionals to ensure equitable, timely, and accurate completion of tasks.

Maintain efficient processes and systems among finance professionals that comply with University policies and procedures.

Grant Management and Support - 10%
Act as a liaison between project leaders (principal investigators) and the Office of Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA).

Maintain knowledge of university policies and grant compliance, assisting principal investigators throughout the project lifecycle, including budget preparation, proposal submission, project initiation, and monitoring.

Coordinate pre- and post-award support for assigned units in conjunction with principal investigators.
Collaborate with Finance and HR partners to ensure the accuracy of grant activities.
Coordinate with SPA/SFR at major milestones during the grant lifecycle.

Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
BA/BS degree with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in finance, accounting, or business.
Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to develop and update financial reporting from university systems.
Familiarity with the University's finance policies, procedures, and processes.
Proficient in using EFS (Enterprise Financial System), HRMS (PeopleSoft Human Resources), and UM Analytics.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple and sometimes competing projects and assignments.
Current employee of the University of Minnesota.
Certified Approver status or willingness to obtain Certified Approver status within the first year (training provided).
