Knoxville, Tennessee, United States Emerald Youth Foundation Full time
Position Overview

Compensation: $17.00 per hour

We appreciate your interest in the role of a Tutor with Emerald Youth Foundation.

Since its inception in 1991, Emerald Youth Foundation has dedicated itself to empowering the youth of Knoxville, fostering generations of principled community leaders. Over the years, we have engaged over 30,000 children and young adults through a diverse array of community initiatives. Annually, we serve more than 3,000 youth in Knoxville, focusing on faith, education, and health.

Purpose of the Tutor Role

Our afterschool programs utilize the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Assessment to identify students' academic strengths and areas for improvement. Emerald Youth is committed to addressing these educational needs and bridging learning gaps. Last year, many students who received tutoring demonstrated significant academic advancement, underscoring the importance of this role. Tutors will assist students in enhancing their reading and math skills through tailored resources and content that align with their individual learning levels. This personalized instruction is crucial for helping students achieve their educational objectives and overcome challenges.

Work Environment

Tutors will be assigned to one of our JustLead program locations. The JustLead initiative operates through a network of numerous churches and faith-based organizations, aiming to cultivate urban youth who are passionate about their faith and equipped to lead positive change in their communities. Engaging and purposeful activities, including academics, health, and service-learning, are conducted in collaboration with these organizations to fulfill our comprehensive mission.

Responsibilities

Tutors will focus on assisting students with their reading and math objectives, tailored to their specific needs and grade levels. Elementary tutoring will emphasize reading skills, while middle school tutoring will concentrate on mathematics. Tutors will receive the necessary curriculum and resources to support their students effectively, along with training on how to implement these materials.

Work Schedule

Tutors are expected to work between 8-10 hours weekly during our afterschool program hours, typically from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Candidates should be available to work at least 3 to 4 days each week for 2-3 hours daily. The specific schedule will be determined based on individual availability and site requirements.

Target Age Group

Tutors will work with groups of 3 to 6 students from elementary and/or middle school levels. One-on-one tutoring will be prioritized to ensure that each student receives the focused support they require. Group tutoring may occur in certain situations, with placements based on the review of candidates' qualifications and availability.

Compensation

Tutors will receive an hourly wage of $17.00.

Commitment Requirements

Applicants must be prepared to commit for the entire academic year and conduct in-person tutoring sessions. Candidates should demonstrate a genuine interest in fostering the academic development of urban youth, build meaningful relationships, and be open to feedback and continuous improvement. A current enrollment in post-secondary education or a college degree is required, along with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess prior teaching or tutoring experience, be enrolled in a teacher-preparation program, or have a background in education. Experience working with urban youth is advantageous.

Next Steps

Interested candidates are encouraged to complete the application questions thoroughly. It is advisable to attach a resume if available. Candidates will be contacted within a week following the submission of their application.

Emerald Youth Foundation is committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all individuals, regardless of race, color, sex, age, or national origin.
