We are seeking an auditor specialized in sales and use tax and/or corporate excise (income-based) taxation to improve our audit reach in New York and adjacent regions. The position primarily operates from the Department's New York office, with opportunities for remote work in a secure environment when not engaged in field audits.

Agency Mission:
The Department of Revenue is committed to collecting necessary revenues to support the Commonwealth's operations, ensuring financial accountability in child support, and aiding Massachusetts municipalities in effective fiscal management. Our goal is to operate in a manner that builds public trust in government through innovative, customer-centric, and transparent tax administration and enforcement.

Tax Division Overview:
The Tax Division plays a crucial role in promoting voluntary compliance and reducing the tax gap by identifying, educating, and auditing noncompliant taxpayers. This division conducts audits on tax returns filed by both businesses and individuals, covering various tax types including corporate excise, sales/use tax, meals tax, rooms occupancy, personal income, and special fuels tax.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan, execute, and manage audits of national and multinational corporations at their headquarters, requiring travel across the continental United States.
  • Analyze and interpret financial documentation to understand business operations and their implications for tax reporting.
  • Apply state regulations and departmental practices to diverse business scenarios, utilizing established auditing standards and methodologies.
  • Communicate audit findings clearly to taxpayers and their representatives, preparing thorough documentation to support conclusions.
  • Represent the agency's position during formal or informal hearings when audit results are contested by taxpayers.
  • Ensure strict compliance with confidentiality laws and regulations regarding all tax-related information obtained during audits.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in accounting or auditing is highly desirable.
  • Background in Corporate Excise (income-based) Tax and/or Sales and Use Tax, with knowledge of statistical sampling methods, is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Federal tax laws and concepts is advantageous for candidates applying for corporate excise tax auditor roles.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, along with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, are essential.
  • Ability to independently conduct field audits at various locations is crucial.
  • Positions may require up to 25% overnight travel for audit purposes.
  • During training, travel requirements may be more extensive, and candidates must be prepared to comply.
  • Telework positions necessitate working from a secure home environment outside of field audit activities.

Additional Information:
Applicants recommended for positions with the Department of Revenue will undergo a comprehensive background check, including verification of state and federal tax compliance, child support compliance, education credentials, and criminal background checks. This position is part of a hybrid work model, combining in-office and remote work.

Equal Opportunity Employer:
The Department of Revenue is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer, encouraging applications from females, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
