Position Overview

UM, Capital Region, a key part of the University of Maryland Medical System, is seeking an Advanced Practice Practitioner to enhance The Heart and Vascular team focused on Vascular and Thoracic Surgery to address growing clinical needs and expanding roles in neuroscience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Become an integral member of a diverse team specializing in vascular and thoracic surgery. The Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) will:
    • Receive comprehensive training to manage all facets of vascular and thoracic care.
    • Have opportunities to provide cross-coverage for other APP-led service lines.
  • Execute routine and advanced responsibilities as outlined in the provider's delegation agreement with the Maryland Board of Physicians or Maryland Board of Nursing. Under physician supervision, the APP will:
    • Deliver diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services to critically ill patients.
    • Gather medical histories, conduct patient examinations, perform daily rounds, order and interpret diagnostic tests, establish initial diagnoses, and recommend necessary treatments.
    • Effectively communicate with attending physicians, medical teams, colleagues, and patients along with their families.
    • Initiate appropriate referrals and specialty consultations or engage other agencies as required.
    • Perform invasive procedures such as central line placements, arterial access, hemodialysis, pulmonary artery catheter insertion, chest tube management, thoracentesis, and removal of intra-aortic balloon pumps.
    • Assist in surgical procedures as needed.
    • Collaborate with attending physicians and clinicians regarding patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Exhibit expertise and proficiency in the required subspecialty:
    • Complete a minimum of 50 hours of Category I CME every two years.
    • Adhere to standards set by the Maryland Board of Physicians or Board of Nursing and follow established procedural protocols.
  • Promote excellence in quality assurance and patient care as part of our High Reliability Organization:
    • Ensure optimal patient care quality while adhering to safety protocols.
    • Maintain a procedure complication rate below the national average.
    • Foster positive team dynamics; utilize open communication to address issues within and between departments.
    • Demonstrate commitment to the professional standards and core values of the organization.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • For PAs: A Bachelor's degree, graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program, and certification from the National Commission of Certification of Physician's Assistants are mandatory. Candidates must possess an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Physicians.
  • For NPs: A Bachelor's degree, RN experience, and completion of an Acute Nurse Practitioner program are required. Candidates must hold an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • One year of experience in vascular or thoracic surgery is preferred.
  • Credentialing from UM Capital Region Health's Medical Staff Office is necessary, along with maintenance of BLS/ACLS certification. ATLS certification is preferred.
  • Compensation will be based on clinical experience.
