Position Overview

UM, Capital Region, a member of the University of Maryland Medical System, is seeking an Advanced Practice Practitioner to enhance the Heart and Vascular team specializing in Vascular and Thoracic Surgery. This role is essential to address the growing clinical needs and expanding roles within the neuroscience department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Become an integral part of a diverse team focused on vascular and thoracic surgical care. The Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) will:
    • Receive comprehensive training to manage all facets of vascular and thoracic health.
    • Have opportunities to provide coverage across various APP-led service lines.
  • Execute routine and advanced responsibilities as outlined in the provider's delegation agreement with the Maryland Board of Physicians or Nursing. Under physician supervision, the APP will:
    • Deliver diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services to critically ill patients.
    • Gather medical histories, conduct patient examinations, perform daily rounds, order and interpret diagnostic tests, establish initial diagnoses, and recommend necessary treatments.
    • Effectively communicate with attending physicians, medical teams, colleagues, and patients along with their families.
    • Initiate appropriate referrals and specialty consultations as required.
    • Perform invasive procedures including Central and Arterial line insertions, Hemodialysis, Pulmonary Artery Catheter placements, chest tube insertions/removals, Thoracentesis, and removal of Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps.
    • Assist in surgical procedures as needed.
    • Collaborate with attending physicians and clinicians on admission, discharge, and transfer decisions.
  • Exhibit proficiency and knowledge in the required subspecialty:
    • Complete a minimum of 50 hours of Category I CME every two years.
    • Adhere to the standards set by the Maryland Board of Physicians or Nursing and follow expanded job description protocols.
  • Promote excellence in quality assurance and patient care as part of a High Reliability Organization:
    • Ensure optimal patient care quality while adhering to safety protocols.
    • Maintain a procedure complication rate below the national average.
    • Foster positive group dynamics; utilize open communication to address issues within and between departments.
    • Demonstrate commitment to the professional standards of the department and organization.

Qualifications

  • For PAs: A Bachelor's degree, graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program, and certification from the National Commission of Certification of Physician's Assistants are mandatory. An active Maryland license from the Maryland Board of Physicians is required.
  • For NPs: A Bachelor's degree, RN experience, and completion of an Acute Nurse Practitioner program are necessary. An active Maryland license from the Maryland Board of Nursing is required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in vascular or thoracic surgery is preferred.
  • Credentialing must be completed through UM Capital Region Health's Medical Staff Office, and maintenance of BLS/ACLS certification is essential. ATLS certification is preferred.
  • Compensation will be based on clinical experience.
