Position Overview

  • Become part of a diverse team that manages neurosurgery, neurocritical care, and elective neurosurgery cases.
  • Your primary responsibility will be as a neurocritical care Advanced Practice Provider, working six-hour shifts within a two-week pay cycle.
  • The role may evolve to include night coverage as the program expands.
  • Advanced Practice Provider will receive training to support all facets of the neuroscience team.
  • Opportunity to cross-cover other Advanced Practice Provider lead service lines.
  • Execute routine and expanded job functions as outlined in the provider's delegation agreement with the Maryland Board of Physicians or Maryland Board of Nursing. Under physician supervision, the APP will:
  • Deliver diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services to critically ill patients.
  • Gather medical histories, conduct patient examinations, perform daily rounds, order and interpret diagnostic tests, formulate initial diagnoses, and prescribe treatments.
  • Effectively communicate with attending physicians, various medical teams, team members, and patients along with their families.
  • Administer therapeutic procedures such as the placement of intracranial monitoring systems, extraventricular drains, VP shunt taps, suturing, and wound care.
  • Provide instruction and counseling to patients and their families.
  • May assist in the operating room when required.
  • Exhibit competence and skill in necessary tasks and procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the required subspecialty.
  • Complete a minimum of 50 hours of Category I Continuing Medical Education (CME) every two years, including 32 hours of trauma-related CME and 16 hours of stroke-related CME.
  • Adhere to standards set by the Maryland Board of Physicians or Board of Nursing and follow expanded job description procedural protocols.
  • Promote excellence in quality assurance and patient care delivery as part of our High Reliability Organization.
  • Ensure optimal quality of patient care while adhering to safety protocols.
  • Maintain a procedure complication rate below the national average.
  • Foster collaborative group dynamics; utilize open communication to address issues within and between departments.
  • Exhibit commitment to the professional values of the department and organization.

Qualifications

  • For Physician Assistants: A Bachelor's degree, graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program, and certification from the National Commission of Certification of Physician's Assistants are mandatory. Candidates must possess an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Physicians.
  • For Nurse Practitioners: A Bachelor's degree, RN experience, and completion of an Acute Nurse Practitioner program are required. Candidates must hold an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • Preferred: One year of experience in neurosurgery or neurocritical care.
  • Credentialing must be obtained from UM Capital Region Health's Medical Staff Office, and maintenance of BLS/ACLS certification is required. ATLS and ENLS certification is preferred.
  • Compensation will be based on clinical experience.
