Position Overview

The selected candidate will be part of the Region Three / Mitigation Division.

The ideal applicant will possess extensive knowledge and experience in insurance, community outreach, and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), alongside exceptional customer service and communication abilities.

Key Responsibilities

As the Flood Insurance Section Supervisor within the R3 Mitigation Floodplain Management and Insurance Branch, your duties will include:

  • Assisting communities in minimizing the socioeconomic effects of disasters by advocating for the acquisition and retention of insurance through the NFIP.
  • Delivering outstanding customer service as a regional flood insurance subject matter expert (SME).
  • Addressing inquiries from policyholders and congressional representatives.
  • Engaging with diverse audiences, including disaster survivors, insurance professionals, floodplain managers, and others.
  • Conducting writing and speaking tasks that require in-depth knowledge of hazard mitigation, floodplain management, and insurance/actuarial science.
  • Producing and/or refining technical documents, including reports on research findings and regulations in specialized areas.

Travel requirements for emergency operations may be extensive, lasting from weeks to months, often with little notice, and may necessitate relocation to emergency sites under challenging conditions.

Requirements

To fulfill our mission, DHS requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. Therefore, all selected candidates must successfully complete and maintain a background investigation for Moderate Risk as a condition of placement in this position.

This may include a credit check after initial job qualifications are assessed, a review of financial issues, and certain criminal offenses.

Qualifications

Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the Federal service.

To qualify for this position at the GS-13 level, candidates must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal government, demonstrating the necessary skills to perform the duties of the position.

Experience may be gained in the federal government, state or local government, or private sector, and must include:

  • Experience with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
  • Familiarity with insurance and/or actuarial science.
  • Experience presenting to various audiences regarding the NFIP.
