About the Department:

The van Hoek Laboratory, part of the School of Systems Biology (SSB) within the College of Science (COS), is dedicated to fundamental biological research in bacteriology and the exploration of innovative antimicrobial agents, particularly targeting multi-drug resistant pathogens. The lab is led by Dr. Monique van Hoek, who serves as the Principal Investigator.

About the Position:

The laboratory is looking for a Research Manager in the field of microbiology/bacteriology to join Dr. Monique van Hoek's research team. We encourage applications from qualified individuals holding a Master's degree in Microbiology, along with relevant experience. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in the development of antimicrobial peptides aimed at combating multi-drug resistant bacteria. The Research Manager will play a crucial role in evaluating these antimicrobial peptides.

This position is essential for supporting the sponsored research project focused on the development of antibacterial peptides and their non-GLP in vivo demonstration of effectiveness against MDR biofilm-forming wound pathogens. The Research Manager will collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator to achieve the technical objectives outlined in the grant, which includes executing experiments as specified in the Statement of Work. Responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments in consultation with the PI, documenting and analyzing data, managing project logistics such as ordering supplies, ensuring safety compliance, preparing reports for sponsors, and assisting in manuscript development.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute laboratory experiments as per the grant specifications related to antibacterial peptide development.
  • Record and analyze experimental data meticulously.
  • Manage the procurement of materials and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports for sponsors and assist in manuscript preparation.
  • Support the PI in managing grant-related experimental data and communications with collaborators.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience working with BSL-2 bacteria.
  • Proven track record of scientific productivity, evidenced by publications.
  • In-depth knowledge of BSL-2 bacteriology requirements for growth, testing, and safety.
  • Proficient in using various computer systems, including MS Teams, GraphPad, and Office software for data analysis and inventory management.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage complex experimental workloads and maintain accurate records.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in preparing reports for sponsors.
  • Background in manuscript preparation for publication.
  • Familiarity with antimicrobial peptides and antibacterial agents.
  • Experience with multi-drug resistant bacteria and ESKAPE pathogens.
  • Skills in testing for hemolytic and cytotoxic activity.
  • Ability to analyze and present scientific data effectively.
  • Experience in laboratory supply ordering and inventory management.
  • Commitment to ensuring safety compliance in laboratory settings.
  • Attention to detail in both laboratory and administrative tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively within a research team.
  • Knowledge of antibiotic testing protocols for bacteria.
