About the Department:

The van Hoek Laboratory, part of the School of Systems Biology (SSB) within the College of Science (COS), is dedicated to pioneering biological research in bacteriology and the innovation of potential new antimicrobial agents, particularly targeting multi-drug resistant and hazardous bacteria. Dr. van Hoek serves as the Principal Investigator and lab head.

About the Position:

The Laboratory is on the lookout for a Research Manager specializing in microbiology/bacteriology to join Dr. Monique van Hoek's research team at the George Mason University SciTech Campus in Manassas, VA. We encourage skilled and driven individuals with a Master's degree in Microbiology and relevant experience to consider this opportunity. The ideal candidate will be passionate about developing antimicrobial peptides as a novel strategy for combating multi-drug resistant bacteria. The Research Manager will engage in the assessment of antimicrobial peptides.

The primary objective of this role is to assist in the sponsored research project focused on Antibacterial peptide development and non-GLP in vivo demonstration of activity and efficacy against MDR Biofilm-forming wound pathogens (ESKAPE). The Research Manager collaborates with the Principal Investigator to achieve the technical objectives of the grant, which includes executing experiments as detailed in the Statement of Work. Responsibilities encompass designing and conducting experiments in consultation with the PI, documenting and analyzing data, managing project logistics including ordering, safety compliance, and inventory, preparing reports for the sponsor, and co-authoring manuscripts with the PI. The Research Manager also facilitates communication with collaborators and oversees team data management.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute laboratory experiments in accordance with the grant specifications outlined in the statement of work related to antibacterial peptide development and non-GLP in vivo demonstration of activity and efficacy against MDR Biofilm-forming wound pathogens (ESKAPE). Assist the PI in liaising with collaborators.
  • Document and analyze laboratory data from experiments.
  • Procure materials and reagents for the grant while ensuring safety compliance.
  • Generate reports for the sponsor and collaborate with the PI on manuscript development.
  • Aid the PI in managing grant-related experimental data.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience working with BSL-2 bacteria, typically acquired through 1-2 years or more.
  • Proven track record of scientific productivity through publications.
  • Solid understanding of BSL2-bacteriology requirements for growth, testing, and safety.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including the use of multiple systems such as MS Teams, GraphPad, and Office software for data analysis and inventory management.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage a complex experimental workload and maintain accurate data records.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in preparing reports for sponsors.
  • Familiarity with manuscript preparation for publication.
  • Background in working with antimicrobial peptides and antibacterial agents.
  • Experience with multi-drug resistant bacteria and ESKAPE pathogens.
  • Knowledge of testing for hemolytic and cytotoxic activity.
  • Ability to analyze and present scientific data effectively.
  • Experience in ordering laboratory supplies and managing inventory.
  • Ensuring safety compliance in the laboratory through training.
  • Exceptional attention to detail in both laboratory and administrative tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with all levels of the research team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of antibiotic testing protocols for bacteria.
