The City of Cambridge Traffic, Parking, and Transportation (TP T) Department is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the Cambridge community by developing and maintaining a high-quality street and parking system that accommodates a variety of transportation options for residents, visitors, and commuters.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

This position, reporting to the Supervising Engineer in the Street Management Division, will provide essential traffic engineering support for the daily operations of the Engineering unit, focusing on traffic signage, signals, pavement markings, traffic management, parking meters, studies, and other assigned tasks.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Manage the planning and coordination of the installation of traffic signs, parking meters, bike racks, and related infrastructure on city streets.
  • Assist with routine maintenance of traffic signals, plan reviews, pavement marking installations, and preparations for special events.
Additional responsibilities include:
  • Conduct investigations related to traffic controls and public inquiries.
  • Support the Department's customer service objectives by providing timely and professional responses to community needs, elected officials, and other city departments.
  • Participate in public meetings and represent the Supervising Engineer in internal meetings when necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee the metal sign program, which includes all regulatory, guide, and warning signs and poles.
  • Manage the parking meter program, encompassing both single-space and multi-space meters.
  • Prepare work orders for city staff and contractors for the installation, enhancement, and maintenance of signs, parking meters, and other traffic control devices.
  • Ensure that private development and contractor work related to traffic controls within the public right-of-way are accurately recorded in database systems and reviewed prior to project completion.
  • Review curb cut applications and construction management plans.
  • Administer the accessible/disability parking space program for on-street accessible parking.
  • Coordinate the installation and upkeep of bicycle racks and bicycle fix-it stations with support from the Community Development Department.
  • Conduct traffic studies, including speed studies, traffic, pedestrian, and bicycle counts, turning movement counts, manual classification counts, crash studies, and other data collection efforts as needed to support traffic engineering studies and roadway design projects.
  • Assist in managing the department's vehicle fleet.
  • Work with department interns or cooperative education students.
  • Support snow emergency traffic operations during significant events.
  • Assist with procurement and service contracts with external vendors.
  • Prepare basic purchasing requests for traffic controls.
  • Review roadway construction and design plans related to traffic controls.
  • Create simple plans and graphics for public communications.
Other specific duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist the pavement marking Traffic Engineer with the installation and routine maintenance of the citywide pavement marking program, which includes all crosswalks and long lines.
  • Assist in the layout of new pavement marking locations on roadways based on design drawings.
  • Supervise the signal contractor in the absence of the Senior Traffic Engineer or Supervising Engineer.
  • Inspect and diagnose basic traffic signal issues.
  • Mark out underground traffic signal utilities.
  • Represent the Department at monthly Pedestrian and/or Bicycle Committee meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a related field is required.
  • Ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Well-organized with the capability to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to convey complex technical information to the public in a timely and professional manner.
  • Understanding of traffic engineering plans is necessary.
  • A Massachusetts Class D driver's license is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three to five years of experience in the transportation engineering field is preferred.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) license is preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills are required, with familiarity in AutoCAD and GIS strongly preferred.
  • Experience with riding a bicycle or micromobility device is preferred.
