Position Overview: The Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia (PDS) is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Criminal Investigative Analyst to join our Investigations Division. This role is crucial in providing comprehensive legal support to indigent individuals facing criminal charges.

About PDS: PDS is an independent organization funded by federal appropriations, committed to delivering legal representation for individuals who cannot afford legal counsel. Our team consists of approximately 200 professionals, including attorneys, social workers, and investigative specialists, all working collaboratively to uphold justice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with legal defense teams to investigate allegations of criminal offenses and identify potential defenses.
  • Conduct thorough investigations of assigned criminal cases, which may involve interviewing witnesses, researching records, and gathering pertinent information.
  • Verify and corroborate all information obtained during investigations, analyzing findings to prepare detailed reports for attorney use.
  • Travel may be required for investigations, including overnight or multi-day trips.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned to support the Investigations Division.

Qualifications:

Educational Background: Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as:

  • Criminal Justice Administration
  • Law
  • Criminology
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • English
  • Journalism/Mass Communication
  • Any related field

All educational qualifications must be from accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and access to a reliable, insured vehicle.
  • No convictions as defined in relevant legal codes.
  • U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Skills:

  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Experience in criminal defense investigations or mitigation.
  • Strong analytical skills for assessing quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and databases.
  • Experience working with underserved communities.
