The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago is seeking a Lead Teacher for our Preschool Program.

Our early childhood educators foster a nurturing environment that encourages learning, character development, healthy lifestyles, and supportive relationships. Compensation begins at $36,192+ annually based on qualifications, with a Monday-Friday schedule and opportunities for advancement within the organization.

As a Lead Teacher, you will be responsible for creating a safe and encouraging classroom atmosphere for preschoolers aged 3-5, while preparing them for kindergarten. Utilizing Creative Curriculum and Illinois Early Learning Standards, the Lead Teacher will design and execute lesson plans that support the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development of children, ensuring that practices are developmentally appropriate. Additionally, the Lead Teacher will oversee classroom management and the supervision of children, as well as conduct assessments and evaluations, adhering to policies established by relevant authorities and organizational standards.

  • Model and promote high-quality teaching and learning practices that enhance kindergarten readiness.
  • Exhibit culturally and linguistically responsive practices that value all children and families, making them feel welcomed and integral to the program.
  • Maintain awareness of children's needs, ensuring their physical health and safety at all times.
  • Foster effective communication and partnerships with parents and families, encouraging their involvement.
  • Comply with all quality standards to maintain safe, high-quality programming.
  • Collaborate regularly with the classroom team, including families, volunteers, and staff.
  • Utilize various data sources to inform instruction and support child-centered learning and development.
  • Engage in annual professional development; apply continuous quality improvement (CQI) practices; and identify diverse instructional resources to meet children's varying needs and enhance the classroom experience.
  • Support recruitment, enrollment, attendance, and retention efforts while upholding the YMCA's mission and operational goals.
Lesson Planning and Classroom Management:
  • Create lesson plans with clear goals, objectives, activities, and outcomes aligned with the Illinois Early Learning Standards.
  • Implement high-quality, developmentally appropriate instructional activities and curriculum approaches (such as Creative CurriculumTM) that facilitate active learning experiences and promote the holistic development of each child, ensuring compliance with relevant accreditation standards.
  • Research and implement appropriate projects for in-depth exploration of topics over time.
  • Establish and maintain an attractive, clean, safe, and engaging classroom environment that encourages children's independence and self-selection of activities.
  • Leverage the physical environment and pedagogical documentation to enhance teaching and learning practices.
  • Use observational data to plan engaging early learning experiences based on the emergent needs of each child.
  • Document observations and maintain child portfolios to assist in assessments.
Qualifications:
  • Must meet licensing and accreditation requirements; ECE Credential Level 1 or higher preferred.
  • 64 semester hours in any discipline with at least 21 hours of college credit in child development, early childhood education, or early childhood special education, along with one of the following:
    • Gateways to Opportunity Level I Illinois Director Credential
    • OR 3 semester hours of college credit in administration, leadership, or management
    • OR 3 points of credential-approved training in administration, leadership, or management.
  • One year of teaching experience or equivalent in a preschool setting is strongly preferred.
  • Must provide documentation of Gateways credentialing or apply within 90 days of employment.
  • Knowledge of designing and implementing Creative Curriculum and other high-quality curriculum approaches is preferred.
  • Pre-employment medical screening and TB test as per program requirements.
  • Food Handlers Training is required to be achieved or maintained once in the role.
Child Abuse Prevention: Supports the YMCA's commitment to child abuse prevention by:
  • Reporting any potential health or safety hazards to your supervisor.
  • Adhering to all policies and procedures related to child safety in our facilities and programs.
  • Reporting any suspicious behavior or violations of policies to your supervisor.
  • Completing all required child abuse prevention training.
