Compensation begins at $43,888+ annually, commensurate with experience, with a Monday to Friday schedule and pathways for advancement within the organization.

As a Lead Instructor, you will be tasked with creating a secure and encouraging classroom environment for preschoolers aged 3-5, preparing them for their transition to kindergarten. Utilizing the Creative Curriculum and Illinois Early Learning Standards, the Lead Instructor will design and execute lesson plans that promote the holistic development of children in areas such as physical, emotional, cognitive, and social skills while adhering to developmentally appropriate practices. Responsibilities also include classroom management, child supervision, assessment, and compliance with established policies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Exemplify and encourage high-quality teaching and learning practices that support kindergarten readiness.
  • Implement culturally and linguistically responsive strategies that honor all children and families, ensuring they feel valued and integral to the program.
  • Maintain vigilant supervision of children's needs, ensuring their health and safety at all times.
  • Foster effective communication and partnerships with parents and families, promoting their involvement.
  • Adhere to all DCFS and quality standards to ensure safe, high-quality programming.
  • Collaborate consistently with the classroom team, including families, volunteers, and staff.
  • Utilize diverse data sources for both formative and summative assessments to guide instruction and child-centered learning.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development annually; apply continuous quality improvement (CQI) principles; and identify various instructional resources to meet the diverse needs of children and enhance their learning experience.
  • Support recruitment, enrollment, attendance, and retention efforts in alignment with the YMCA's mission and operational goals.
Lesson Planning and Classroom Oversight:
  • Create lesson plans with clear goals, objectives, activities, and outcomes aligned with the Illinois Early Learning Standards.
  • Deliver high-quality, developmentally suitable instructional activities and curriculum approaches (such as Creative CurriculumTM) that promote active learning and support the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth of each child, while ensuring compliance with DCFS, YMCA, ExceleRate IllinoisTM, and NAEYC accreditation standards, as applicable.
  • Research and implement relevant studies/projects for in-depth exploration of topics over time.
  • Establish and maintain an inviting, clean, safe, and stimulating classroom environment that encourages children's independence and choice of activities.
  • Utilize the physical environment and pedagogical documentation to enhance teaching and learning practices.
  • Employ observational and child data to plan engaging early learning experiences tailored to the emergent needs of each child.
  • Document observations and maintain child portfolios to support assessments.
Qualifications:
  • Must fulfill DCFS licensing and program-related accreditation/credentialing requirements; ECE Credential Level 1 or higher preferred.
  • Alternatively, possess 64 semester hours in any field with at least 21 hours of college credit in child development, early childhood education, or early childhood special education, along with one of the following:
    • Gateways to Opportunity Level I Illinois Director Credential
    • OR 3 semester hours of college credit in administration, leadership, or management
    • OR 3 points of credential-approved training in administration, leadership, or management.
  • Preferred: One year of teaching experience or equivalent in a preschool setting.
  • Must provide documentation of Gateways credentialing or apply within 90 days of employment.
  • Knowledge of designing and implementing the Creative Curriculum and other high-quality curriculum approaches is preferred.
  • Pre-employment medical screening and TB test as per program requirements.
  • Required to achieve or maintain: Food Handlers Training.
