Role Summary:

The Senior Research Engineer role is vital within the COSMIAC organization, tasked with supervising the engineering team's efforts to guarantee that all hardware and payload designs align with essential scientific standards. The ideal candidate will bring an engineering perspective to research initiatives for spaceflight missions supported by grants and contracts.

Moreover, the successful applicant will be accountable for gathering, developing, analyzing, and disseminating a diverse array of space-related data and requirements. They will engage in applied research, design, and execute various analytical and statistical evaluations. The Senior Research Engineer will also provide functional leadership, mentorship, and support to fellow researchers as necessary.

Additionally, the candidate will perform functional assessments of electrical designs to appraise the institutional resources available for executing intricate programs. They will utilize statistical analysis methods to evaluate and consult on the results of power designs. The Senior Research Engineer will also leverage software tools to design, manipulate, summarize, and generate reports from extensive and complex data sets and generic design features.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, constructing, and testing specialized equipment and/or instrumentation for research purposes pertaining to national defense, outer space, industry, or the global environment. They will collaborate with procurement and human resources teams to ensure that team members have the necessary resources for successful job performance.

The Senior Research Engineer must demonstrate the ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet multiple deadlines. Additionally, they should be prepared to travel to various locations as required.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification may be required, depending on the area of expertise.
  • The successful candidate must undergo a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history assessment.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a directly related field; a minimum of 3 years of experience directly related to the specified duties and responsibilities.

Completed degrees from accredited institutions that exceed the minimum educational requirement may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Possesses a DoD Security Clearance to fulfill necessary security obligations.
  • Serves as the primary liaison for space systems at the COSMIAC Research Center and represents the center to the School of Engineering.
  • Oversees, instructs, and provides training to junior engineers while coordinating facility enhancements to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Conducts functional assessments of electrical designs to evaluate institutional resources for completing complex programs.
  • Utilizes statistical analysis techniques to assess and consult on the outcomes of power designs.
  • Employs software to design, manipulate, summarize, and generate reports from extensive and complex data sets and generic design features.
  • Designs, constructs, and tests specialized equipment and/or instrumentation for research purposes related to national defense, outer space, industry, or the global environment.
  • Collaborates with procurement and human resources teams to ensure team members have the necessary resources for successful job performance.
