Position Overview:
The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is looking for a qualified candidate to fill the role of Research Engineer II within the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. This position is crucial for advancing our research capabilities and requires a strong foundation in engineering principles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilize established engineering and mathematical methodologies to design, construct, and evaluate both standard and specialized equipment for research initiatives.
- Coordinate instrument repairs with laboratory management and procure necessary components for maintenance.
- Oversee the upkeep of electronic devices, including high-voltage circuit boards and vacuum systems.
- Collaborate with laboratory teams to innovate or enhance scientific apparatus.
- Diagnose and rectify issues in circuit boards, ensuring effective component replacements.
- Conduct analysis and repairs on both low and high voltage circuits.
- Test and maintain vacuum systems, implementing necessary modifications.
- Possess proficiency in instrument software and programming languages such as ladder logic, C, and BASIC, along with computer-aided design tools.
- Foster relationships with manufacturing partners and service technicians.
- Implement minor adjustments and enhancements to research instrumentation as required.
- Stay updated on the latest advancements in technology and instrumentation relevant to the field.
- Construct or modify electrical infrastructure for instruments when necessary.
- Perform additional job-related tasks as assigned.
Employment Conditions:
Professional Engineer (PE) certification may be necessary based on the specific area of expertise. Candidates must undergo a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history review.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of one year of experience directly related to the outlined responsibilities. Advanced degrees from accredited institutions may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to independently repair complex research instruments integral to comprehensive research projects. A solid understanding of electronic and electrical systems, vacuum technology, and instrumentation principles is essential. Familiarity with voltage and frequency-based signal detection and programming capabilities in logic, EPROM, ROM, PLC, and microcontrollers is advantageous. Proficiency in using testing and analytical tools, such as oscilloscopes and other electrical measurement devices, is preferred.
