The Assistant Director of Exhibitions plays a pivotal role in orchestrating the museum's extensive exhibition initiatives. Reporting directly to the Deputy Director for Curatorial and Exhibitions, this position is tasked with the strategic planning and coordination of a diverse array of exhibitions. Collaborating closely with the Deputy Director, the successful candidate will be instrumental in formulating the long-term exhibition calendar and managing the associated budget.
This role involves leading a dedicated team of four professionals, ensuring that the workflow for permanent collection displays, commissioned works, temporary exhibitions, and traveling shows is effectively managed. The ideal candidate will exhibit a proactive approach to problem-solving, possess the ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment, and manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining effective communication with external stakeholders, including artists, vendors, and museum professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Deputy Director to create and uphold long-term exhibition schedules and financial plans.
- Oversee the planning and coordination of all exhibitions, working in tandem with various teams across the museum, including Curatorial, Art Preparation, Collections Management, Conservation, and Registration. Manage the exhibition coordination team, delegating tasks and projects as needed.
- Establish and monitor the budgetary framework for each project, coordinating the preparation and scheduling of Exhibition Review Committee Meetings.
- Lead the development of exhibition tours, including creating solicitation materials, identifying potential venues, and managing cost tracking and reconciliation.
- Oversee the creation of necessary agreements, including professional service contracts and exhibition agreements.
- Guide the planning of the annual operating budget for the exhibition program, ensuring alignment with divisional targets.
- Engage with key external stakeholders to support the museum's innovative initiatives.
- Ensure clear communication of program details, schedules, titles, and credit lines to all museum staff.
- Participate in special projects or initiatives as assigned.
Benefits
- The anticipated salary for this position is $115,000 - $125,000, subject to change, and includes eligibility for a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in art history or a related discipline.
- 8 to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in exhibition budgeting, planning, and production.
- In-depth knowledge of the exhibition development process, including project management, budgeting, and contracts.
- Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability to changing priorities, and the ability to collaborate with a diverse team.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, along with strong organizational abilities.
- Proficient in advanced computer applications, including MS Office and Google Workspace; familiarity with TMS is preferred.
- Knowledge of a foreign language is advantageous.
