Job Summary

The J. Paul Getty Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Associate Director for Exhibitions to join its team. This is a key leadership role that will play a critical part in shaping the Museum's exhibitions program and ensuring its continued success.

The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of exhibition concepts, practices, policies, and procedures, as well as extensive experience with international projects and partners. They will be able to develop and manage a world-class exhibitions program, working closely with the Director of the Museum and other senior staff to achieve the Museum's strategic objectives.

The Associate Director for Exhibitions will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Exhibitions department, including the development of exhibition concepts, the selection and acquisition of artworks, and the coordination of exhibition installations. They will also be responsible for leading a team of curators, designers, and other staff to deliver high-quality exhibitions that meet the Museum's standards.

The successful candidate will have a strong track record of leadership and management, with experience of developing and implementing exhibitions programs, managing budgets, and leading teams. They will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including curators, designers, artists, and other Museum staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a world-class exhibitions program, working closely with the Director of the Museum and other senior staff to achieve the Museum's strategic objectives.
  • Lead a team of curators, designers, and other staff to deliver high-quality exhibitions that meet the Museum's standards.
  • Develop exhibition concepts, select and acquire artworks, and coordinate exhibition installations.
  • Manage budgets and lead teams to deliver exhibitions on time and within budget.
  • Work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including curators, designers, artists, and other Museum staff.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree.
  • A broad network of national and international peers and other museum colleagues.
  • Deep knowledge of exhibition concepts, practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Extensive experience with international projects and partners.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience with detailed budget creation, oversight, and reporting.
  • A proven track record as an excellent team leader and facilitator, authoritative and decisive yet open-minded and encouraging of new ideas and voices.
