Position Overview
WSP is actively seeking a Project Accounting Consultant who can operate from any of WSP's regional offices on the west coast.

Role Responsibilities

As an experienced project accounting professional, you will provide essential financial and accounting support to one or more Project Managers and their respective teams. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing and assessing project charges for precision.
  • Executing cost transfers and updating funding as necessary.
  • Establishing and maintaining project budgets while ensuring all project data is up-to-date for medium-sized and moderately complex projects.

You will generate comprehensive financial documentation and reports related to infrastructure, transportation, and professional services projects, collaborating closely with project managers on pre-billing reviews, cost estimates, and invoicing processes.


Your Contributions

For assigned projects, you will:

  • Oversee and analyze the collection, recording, and allocation of project costs and revenues, ensuring accurate profit and loss calculations.
  • Communicate project financial performance and profitability to project and program management.
  • Manage lifecycle project accounting from account creation in Oracle to project close-out, including validating invoices and reconciling payables and receivables.

Additionally, you will perform detailed accounting tasks related to project contracts, billing events, and revenue exceptions for medium-sized and moderately complex projects.


Collaboration and Reporting

Work in partnership with Project Managers and teams to:

  • Establish and update project budgets.
  • Provide accounting recommendations in response to contract modifications or budget changes.

Generate financial reports for projects, identifying any issues such as labor discrepancies that require escalation to the Project Manager.

Authorize access to project accounts and manage the transfer of expenses in compliance with established accounting practices.


Quality Control and Compliance

Maintain high standards for generating accurate project-related financial records using Oracle and spreadsheets. You will:

  • Apply your accounting expertise to project resources, labor, and expenses, investigating variances and submitting reports to management.
  • Verify contract and change order details for medium-sized and moderately complex projects.
  • Monitor key indicators for managing challenging projects, keeping management informed of any concerns.

Ensure draft invoices are accurate per contract requirements, making necessary corrections and obtaining approvals before submission to clients.


Subcontractor Management

Coordinate with Contract Administrators on subcontract management, which includes:

  • Evaluating subconsultant invoices for accuracy.
  • Establishing and maintaining purchase orders for subcontractors.
  • Following up on payment requests with Accounts Payable.

Identify and document unpaid contract billings, addressing any overdue accounts receivable and unbilled costs.


Communication and Reporting

Respond to client requests for detailed information, investigate unbilled project expenses, and review all project-related billings. Attend project meetings to update the team on the financial status of projects and discuss any identified issues.

Prepare and submit government reports related to projects and compile information for review by senior consultants prior to audits.


Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you should possess:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a closely related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in accounting and project contracts.
  • A working knowledge of project accounting principles and practices.

Additionally, you should demonstrate strong analytical skills, effective communication abilities, and proficiency in accounting software and MS Excel.
