The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care is looking for a dedicated Lead Pharmacy Technician Coordinator to enhance our team. This role is integral to the pharmacy management structure, operating under the guidance of the Pharmacy Manager. The Lead Pharmacy Technician Coordinator will oversee and manage personnel and technical operations within the UIHC Acute Care Pharmacies. This position primarily supervises pharmacy staff during the second shift, offering flexible scheduling options, ideally from 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM, with possibilities for four 10-hour shifts or five 8-hour shifts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Staff Development:
- Assist in the creation of training and orientation materials for new employees.
- Facilitate the training and onboarding process for pharmacy staff.
- Evaluate staff training effectiveness and provide constructive feedback on skill assessments.
- Maintain proficiency and execute all responsibilities of a Pharmacy Technician.
- Resource Coordination:
- Communicate essential information regarding medication shortages to the team.
- Manage supply chain logistics effectively.
- Implement new compounding protocols as necessary.
- Develop and disseminate relevant documentation to staff.
- Enhance inventory management for medications in limited supply through automated dispensing systems.
- Support the preparation and assessment of aseptic techniques and competencies.
- Supervise the technical processes involved in drug preparation and dispensing, ensuring adherence to established protocols.
- Personnel Management:
- Conduct interviews and recommend candidates for pharmacy technician positions.
- Participate in employee orientation and ongoing training initiatives.
- Oversee employee performance evaluations, counseling, and disciplinary actions.
- Manage scheduling and work assignments for pharmacy staff.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards.
- Lead technician meetings to foster communication and teamwork.
- Evaluate the quality and efficiency of pharmacy services provided to UIHC, adhering to established standards.
- Engage in administrative tasks, including the preparation of operational procedures, workload analyses, and budget documentation.
- Contribute to management discussions regarding new services, employee relations, and operational control.
- Provide resource estimates necessary for initiating services, including staffing and equipment needs.
- Monitor the functionality of clean rooms and automated compounding equipment.
- Initiate repair requests or adjustments as required.
- Maintain accurate records, including payroll and inventory documentation.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge in communication, employee relations, and management practices.
- Ensure adequate supplies of medications and materials are maintained and properly stored.
- Assist pharmacy managers in understanding and implementing relevant regulations regarding sterile product preparation.
- Perform all duties of pharmacy technicians as needed.
- Encourage staff to align with UIHC's strategic goals and objectives.
- Promote medication safety awareness among staff and seek improvements in workflow processes.
- Oversee the training and education of externship students in sterile product preparation.
- Staff according to workload demands, including a minimum of two weekend shifts every 12 weeks.
- Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned.
- Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification: Successful completion of the pharmacy technician certification exam within the first year of employment.
- At least 3 years of experience in a supervisory or technical role within a pharmacy setting.
- Demonstrated commitment to service excellence.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with team members, healthcare providers, and vendors.
- Experience working effectively with diverse populations.
- Experience in a hospital pharmacy environment.
- Advanced degree in healthcare or management (e.g., MHA, MPH, MBA) is a plus.
- Familiarity with automation technologies, human resources management, project management, and electronic health records.
- Ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
