Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:


This role is primarily focused on assessing eligibility for WIC participants, analyzing client laboratory results, discussing dietary needs, recommending WIC food packages, and distributing EBT cards. The position may also involve supporting the WIC Dietitian as necessary. Candidates must demonstrate emotional maturity, the ability to perform effectively under pressure, and possess strong organizational and prioritization skills.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Understand and adhere to the Employee Handbook.
  2. Embody the mission and vision of CareSouth.
  3. Promote a culture of safety to mitigate risks of injury and liability by implementing the Risk Management and Infection Control Plan.
  4. Execute responsibilities with a commitment to high-quality standards to enhance compliance, quality, and patient outcomes in alignment with the Quality Improvement Plan.
  5. Be punctual and prepared for scheduled work hours.
  6. Participate in training sessions, departmental meetings, and community outreach events.
  7. Collaborate effectively with team members.
  8. Access the WIC Learning Management System (LMS) to fulfill required training.
  9. Guide participants in utilizing the WIC Gateway Link for completing nutrition assessments.
  10. Conduct initial evaluations of clients in accordance with WIC Department Policies & Procedures, determining eligibility and documenting in the LaWIN system.
  11. Certify and evaluate client weight, measure and chart growth, and perform hemoglobin tests.
  12. Encourage breastfeeding and provide education to all prenatal clients, referring them to the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor as per WIC guidelines.
  13. Assign suitable food packages based on nutritional evaluations, accurately issuing benefits on WIC EBT cards and reviewing eligibility criteria.
  14. Maintain confidentiality of workplace information as per organizational policies.
  15. Work professionally with colleagues in the department and center.
  16. Communicate with all clients in a respectful and professional manner.
  17. Operate within the guidelines set by departmental, WIC State Agency, and CareSouth policies and procedures.
  18. Attend orientation, LaWIN, and WIC State Agency training sessions.
  19. Consult with the WIC Program Manager or designated personnel for policy clarifications.
  20. Follow grievance procedures when necessary.
  21. Engage in ongoing education opportunities.
  22. Participate in staff meetings.
  23. Contribute to Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives.
  24. Keep the WIC Program Manager informed of departmental issues and suggest practical solutions to address regulatory changes and departmental needs.
  25. Serve as a positive role model by interacting confidently and constructively.
  26. Communicate effectively to achieve desired outcomes.
  27. Ensure oral and written communications are accurate, timely, and professional.
  28. Greet clients warmly and professionally upon arrival, demonstrating a willingness to assist.
  29. Wear facility identification while on duty.
  30. Represent the health center positively in the community through participation in health fairs and other volunteer activities.
  31. Accurately report time and attendance in accordance with policies.
  32. Utilize and maintain equipment and supplies effectively.
  33. Implement cost-effective measures in daily operations.
  34. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:


EDUCATION/LICENSE:


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics, human ecology, home economics, family and consumer sciences, health promotion, pre-medicine, or nursing.

SUBSTITUTIONS: An associate degree in the aforementioned fields plus two years of experience as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator in Louisiana may substitute for the bachelor's degree. Twelve semester hours in food and nutrition or dietetics along with three years of experience as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator in Louisiana may also substitute for the bachelor's degree. Additionally, twelve semester hours in food and nutrition or dietetics with three years of experience in patient care may substitute for the bachelor's degree.


NOTE: All college credits or degrees must be from an accredited institution.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:


Within six months of employment, candidates must complete the Competent Professional Authority (CPA) training mandated by the Louisiana State WIC Agency and successfully fulfill established competencies during the probationary period.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:


Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to collaborate effectively within a team to ensure quality patient care. Proficiency in organizing, prioritizing, and working independently while managing time effectively.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


  1. Visual acuity - always required.
  2. Hand-eye coordination - always required.
  3. Lifting 10-15 lbs., pushing, pulling - occasionally required.
  4. Stooping, bending, and standing - occasionally required.
  5. Frequent walking for short distances.
  6. Prolonged sitting with significant time spent on a computer.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:


  1. Indoor, climate-controlled setting.
  2. Potential exposure to diseases or infections.
  3. No vibrations.
  4. Exposure to artificial and/or natural light.
  5. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
