Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:


This role is primarily tasked with assessing eligibility for WIC participants, analyzing client laboratory results, discussing dietary needs, prescribing WIC food packages, and distributing EBT cards. The position may also require support to the WIC Dietitian as necessary. Candidates must demonstrate emotional maturity and the ability to perform effectively under pressure while managing and prioritizing tasks efficiently.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Understand and adhere to the Employee Handbook.
  2. Embody the mission and vision of CareSouth.
  3. Implement safety protocols to mitigate risks of injury, claims, loss, or liability by following the Risk Management and Infection Control Plan.
  4. Execute responsibilities with a commitment to high-quality standards to enhance compliance, quality, and patient outcomes in alignment with the Quality Improvement Plan.
  5. Be punctual and prepared for scheduled shifts.
  6. Participate in training sessions, departmental meetings, and community outreach events.
  7. Collaborate effectively with team members.
  8. Access the WIC Learning Management System (LMS) to complete mandatory WIC training.
  9. Guide participants in utilizing the WIC Gateway Link for completing nutrition assessments.
  10. Conduct initial evaluations of clients in accordance with WIC Department Policies & Procedures, determining eligibility and documenting findings in the LaWIN system.
  11. Assess and certify client weight, measure and plot growth, and perform hemoglobin tests.
  12. Encourage breastfeeding and provide education to all prenatal clients, referring them to the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor as per WIC guidelines.
  13. Assign suitable food packages based on nutritional evaluations, accurately issuing benefits on WIC EBT cards and reviewing program eligibility.
  14. Maintain confidentiality of workplace information as per organizational policies.
  15. Work professionally as part of a team with other department and center employees.
  16. Communicate with all clients in a courteous and professional manner.
  17. Operate within the frameworks established by departmental, WIC State Agency, and CareSouth policies and procedures.
  18. Attend general orientation and required training sessions.
  19. Consult with the WIC Program Manager or designated personnel for policy clarifications when necessary.
  20. Understand and adhere to the Grievance policy when required.
  21. Engage in ongoing education opportunities.
  22. Participate in staff meetings and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  23. Keep the WIC Program Manager informed of departmental issues, changes, and challenges, proposing practical solutions in response to evolving regulations and client needs.
  24. Act as a positive role model by consistently interacting confidently and productively.
  25. Communicate effectively to achieve desired outcomes.
  26. Ensure oral and written communications are accurate, timely, and professional.
  27. Welcome clients warmly upon their arrival, demonstrating a proactive willingness to assist.
  28. Wear appropriate identification while on duty.
  29. Represent the health center in the community professionally through participation in health fairs and volunteer activities.
  30. Accurately report time and attendance in accordance with policies.
  31. Utilize and maintain equipment and supplies responsibly.
  32. Implement cost-effective practices daily.
  33. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:


EDUCATION/LICENSURE:


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics, human ecology, home economics, family and consumer sciences, health promotion, pre-medicine, or nursing.

SUBSTITUTIONS: An associate degree in the aforementioned fields along with two years of experience as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator in Louisiana may substitute for the bachelor's degree. Additionally, twelve semester hours in food and nutrition or dietetics combined with three years of experience as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator in Louisiana can also serve as a substitute for the bachelor's degree.


NOTE: All college credits or degrees must be obtained from an accredited institution.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:


Within six months of employment, candidates must complete the Competent Professional Authority (CPA) training mandated by the Louisiana State WIC Agency and successfully meet established competencies for the role during the probationary period.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:


Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to collaborate with others to ensure quality patient care. Competence in organizing, prioritizing, and working independently while meeting deadlines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


  1. Visual acuity - always required.
  2. Hand-eye coordination - consistently required.
  3. Lifting 10-15 lbs., pushing, pulling - occasionally required.
  4. Stooping, bending, and standing - occasionally required.
  5. Frequent walking for short distances.
  6. Prolonged sitting with significant time spent using a computer.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:


  1. Indoor, climate-controlled setting.
  2. Potential exposure to diseases or infections.
  3. No vibrations present.
  4. Exposure to artificial and/or natural light.
  5. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
