Position: Geotechnical Engineering Manager

Role Summary:

In the capacity of Geotechnical Engineering Manager, you will play a pivotal role in guiding the design of solar tracker foundations for Array Technologies, Inc.'s global operations. This position entails overseeing a centralized engineering team while providing functional leadership to engineers dedicated to specific markets within a matrix organizational structure. You will take charge of various workflows across Pre-Sales, Contract Preparation, and Post-Contract phases, delivering preliminary and final designs along with engineering documentation for construction. This role may involve occasional evening and weekend commitments, as well as limited travel.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of engineers tasked with:
    • Evaluating geotechnical and structural engineering reports to formulate initial foundation designs.
    • Creating a Bill of Materials (BOM) for the foundation products necessary for solar installations.
    • Overseeing modifications to foundation designs and BOM throughout the construction phase.
    • Collaborating with external engineering service providers for foundation design solutions.
    • Conducting grading analysis services.
    • Working closely with Applications Engineering Managers and Civil Structural Engineering Managers to ensure Array's comprehensive technical services remain industry-leading.
    • Engaging with various stakeholders across the organization to align engineering processes with broader business workflows.
    • Providing prioritization guidance to team members based on Array's overarching business objectives.
    • Developing advanced technical expertise in Array's product offerings and their applications in geotechnical engineering.
    • Estimating grading analysis and coordinating with Civil Engineers of Record on grading requirements for tracker installations.
    • Drafting and approving project-specific Pull Out Test scope of work documents.
    • Maintaining relationships with Professional Engineering and Pull Out Test firms in operational regions.
    • Delivering technical presentations on geotechnical engineering topics for client meetings as required.
    • Collaborating with a geographically diverse team to provide top-tier engineering services, establishing standardized geotechnical design criteria for Array's tracker systems.
    • Building robust technical relationships with clients' engineering leadership.
    • Reviewing, editing, and approving technical project specifications in Requests for Proposals (RFPs) related to geotechnical engineering and compliance with codes.
    • Addressing escalated technical issues from the Applications Engineering Group.
    • Leading the development and evaluation of tools and software applications utilized by the Applications Engineering Group.
    • Participating in standards organizations to influence industry-level changes in geotechnical engineering and structural codes.
    • Advancing geotechnical engineering and foundation design methodologies in collaboration with other engineering disciplines and thought leaders to ensure optimal, defendable designs are consistently presented to clients.
    • Expected to travel primarily within the United States, up to 10%, with occasional international travel as necessary.
    • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Over 10 years of experience in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering roles.
  • Minimum of 5 years in the design of driven pile foundations.
  • Proficiency in geotechnical analysis software, particularly LPILE.
  • Expertise in grading analysis using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Ability to interpret geotechnical data and apply it to utility-scale solar projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of local US building codes for optimizing foundation designs in utility solar applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Experience in managing engineering teams, especially remote teams.
  • Expertise in applying international building codes for optimizing foundation designs in utility solar.
  • Recognition as a thought leader in the industry.
  • Capability to work across multiple organizations in a dynamic, smaller company environment.
