Trauma Surgery Physician Assistant

The primary role involves performing diagnostic and therapeutic tasks under the guidance of a supervising surgeon. This position is essential in enhancing the physician's capacity to make informed decisions for accurate diagnoses and effective treatment planning. The individual will assist in collecting necessary data to implement the surgeon's therapeutic strategies and will be qualified to provide care to patients across designated age groups in their clinical area.
Additionally, the physician assistant will serve as an advocate for patients within the healthcare system, acting as a confidant, advisor, and liaison between patients and medical professionals.
The position reports directly to the supervising surgeon for all patient-related functions, with charting privileges determined by the Procedure and Medical Records Committee based on the surgeon's recommendations. Collaboration with medical staff, nursing personnel, and other departments is vital to coordinate patient care effectively.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Deliver clinical support in both inpatient and outpatient environments.
- Conduct patient assessments in a clinic setting, which includes obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, and counseling patients, while also executing minor outpatient surgical procedures as appropriate and documenting all activities in accordance with established protocols.
- Develop preliminary patient care plans based on assessments and document all actions in compliance with established policies.
- Provide post-operative care by evaluating patients' physical conditions to prevent secondary complications, including suture removal and wound management as necessary.
- Maintain accurate patient records using the electronic medical records system for documentation and billing purposes.
- Conduct hospital rounds with the supervising physician or independently to monitor patients' conditions.
- Execute other non-surgical healthcare tasks that align with training approved by the board and are delegated by the supervising physician.
- Function as an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) involved in diagnosing and initiating treatment for trauma patients in collaboration with the Trauma Attending physician.
- Act as a liaison for nursing staff, medical personnel, social services, pastoral care, and other hospital departments regarding the management of trauma service patients.
- Coordinate patient care from the Emergency Department through inpatient services.
- Manage patient communications and triage calls as necessary.
- Interact with colleagues, visitors, and other staff in alignment with the organizational values of Jefferson.
- Prescribe and administer medications and medical devices as delegated by the supervising physician, adhering to federal regulations.
- Uphold patient confidentiality and rights in compliance with HIPAA and practice standards.
- Facilitate the care of general trauma service patients by coordinating with ancillary services and families for outpatient follow-up.
- Order and interpret results from laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic tests as required.
- Recommend and prescribe medications and treatments following established federal and state guidelines.
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds when available.
- Maintain professional development through supervision, continuing education, and relevant learning opportunities.
- Assist the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager in meeting state designation and American College of Surgeons verification standards.
- Support educational needs assessments for pre-hospital personnel, nurses, and physicians.
- Provide policy and procedure training to those involved with the Trauma Acute Care Surgery program.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Trauma Medical Director.
- Integrate performance improvement into professional practice.
- Participate in Trauma Committees, including Trauma Morbidity and Mortality reviews and Multi-disciplinary Operations Committee meetings.
- Communicate performance improvement issues to the Division Director and team members.
- Engage with referring physicians regarding patient care.
- Conduct ongoing departmental quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with the supervising physician and director of physician extender services.
- Utilize and maintain proficiency with the institution's medical record system.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned.
National Board Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is necessary.
Current ACLS and BCLS certifications are required.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
