The primary responsibility of this role is to assist the surgeon in performing diagnostic and therapeutic tasks, enhancing the physician's ability to deliver effective patient care. The individual will support the surgeon in decision-making processes essential for establishing diagnoses and planning treatment strategies. This position requires the ability to provide care for patients across various age groups within the designated clinical area.
Furthermore, the physician assistant will serve as a patient advocate within the healthcare system, acting as a confidant, advisor, and liaison between patients and healthcare providers.
This role reports directly to the supervising surgeon for all patient care-related activities. Charting privileges will be determined by the Procedure and Medical Records Committee based on the surgeon's recommendations. The individual will collaborate with medical staff, nursing personnel, and other departments to ensure comprehensive patient care.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Deliver clinical support in both inpatient and outpatient environments.
- Conduct patient assessments in a clinical setting, which includes obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, and providing counseling. Minor outpatient surgical procedures may also be performed when appropriate, with all activities documented in accordance with established protocols.
- Develop preliminary patient care plans based on assessments and document all actions in line with established policies.
- Provide post-operative care by evaluating patients' physical conditions to prevent secondary complications, removing sutures or staples, and delivering specific care as needed.
- Maintain accurate patient records using the electronic medical records system for documentation and billing purposes.
- Conduct hospital rounds with the physician or independently to monitor patients' conditions.
- Execute other non-surgical healthcare tasks as delegated by the supervising physician, consistent with training and experience.
- Function as an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in diagnosing and initiating treatment for trauma patients in collaboration with the Trauma Attending.
- Act as a liaison for nursing staff, medical personnel, social services, and other hospital departments regarding the management of trauma patients.
- Coordinate patient care from the Emergency Department through inpatient services.
- Manage patient calls and triage them as necessary.
- Interact with colleagues, visitors, and staff in alignment with the core values of the institution.
- Prescribe and administer medications and medical devices as delegated by the supervising physician, adhering to federal regulations.
- Uphold patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and practice standards.
- Facilitate the care of trauma patients by coordinating with ancillary services and families for outpatient follow-up.
- Order and interpret lab, x-ray, and other diagnostic tests as necessary.
- Recommend medications and treatments according to established regulations.
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds when available.
- Maintain professional development through supervision and continuing education.
- Assist the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager in meeting state designation and verification requirements.
- Support educational needs assessments for pre-hospital personnel, nurses, and physicians.
- Provide training on policies and procedures related to the trauma program.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Trauma Medical Director.
- Integrate performance improvement initiatives into professional practice.
- Participate in Trauma Committees, including Trauma Morbidity and Mortality and Multi-disciplinary Operations Committee.
- Communicate performance improvement issues to the Division Director and team members.
- Maintain ongoing quality improvement studies in collaboration with the supervising physician.
- Utilize and maintain proficiency in the institution's medical record system.
- Other duties as assigned.
