Job Summary

Akron Public Schools is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Substitute Educational Assistant to join our team. As a Substitute Educational Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the educational and personal needs of students with diverse abilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist students with daily living skills, such as toileting, dressing, and feeding.
  • Provide one-on-one support to students with special needs, including those with physical, emotional, or cognitive disabilities.
  • Assist with classroom activities, such as preparing materials, supervising students, and maintaining a safe and organized learning environment.
  • Communicate effectively with students, teachers, and other staff members to ensure a smooth and efficient learning experience.
  • Participate in crisis prevention and intervention techniques to ensure student safety.
  • Assist with data collection and record-keeping to track student progress and development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the teacher or school administrator.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must meet one of the following criteria: complete at least two years of study at an Institute of Higher Education, hold an Associate (or higher) Degree from an Accredited Institution of Higher Education, or pass the Test for Paraprofessionals.
  • Satisfactory BCII and FBI background checks required.
  • Must have two professional references.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and other staff members.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to accurately record student progress.
  • Ability to assist students with class work.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations.
  • Ability to exercise organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage students.
Working Conditions

The Substitute Educational Assistant will work in a fast-paced educational environment, interacting with students, teachers, and other staff members on a daily basis. The position requires the ability to lift, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, climb, kneel, and stoop frequently. The Substitute Educational Assistant may be required to restrain unruly children and work with students who have physical, emotional, or cognitive disabilities.
