About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated LGBT Legal Advocate to join our team at In Our Own Voices, Inc. (IOOV). As a key member of our organization, you will play a pivotal role in promoting justice and equity for LGBTQ+ communities in the Capital Region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Distribute Culturally Sensitive Resources: Create and disseminate legal resources for LGBTQ+ individuals, with a focus on People of Color. This involves building partnerships with community organizations to ensure these resources reach those who need them most.
  • Strengthen Relationships with Justice Systems: Foster and maintain relationships between IOOV and local courts, law enforcement, and other justice systems. This advocacy ensures that LGBTQ+ individuals receive fair treatment and support within these systems.
  • Collaborate with Community Partners: Work closely with other community organizations to provide relevant and culturally competent services. This includes connecting clients to appropriate resources and referrals for legal and social support.
  • Outreach and Advocacy: Conduct proactive outreach to LGBTQ+ communities, raising awareness about their legal and civil rights. Provide direct support and guidance to community members to help them navigate these rights.
  • Support for Survivors: Collaborate with IOOV team members to support clients who are survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. This includes coordinating safe housing, safety planning, legal counseling, and advocacy services to ensure comprehensive support.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Undertake other responsibilities as assigned to advance IOOV's mission and provide robust advocacy for the communities we serve.
Requirements
  • A deep commitment to IOOV's mission and core values of equity, justice, and empowerment for LGBTQ+ communities.
  • At least 2 years of direct experience in human services, particularly in roles involving advocacy or support for marginalized communities.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including staff, clients, and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience handling sensitive issues and building strong, trust-based relationships with community partners.
  • Strong teamwork skills with a positive and proactive approach to contributing to a collaborative work environment.
  • Effective problem-solving skills with the ability to address and resolve concerns or challenges thoughtfully.
  • Reliable transportation with a valid NYS driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of experience working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence, especially those engaged in legal systems, with demonstrated advocacy skills for underserved communities.
  • A 4-year degree in a relevant field is preferred; however, equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • A solution-oriented mindset with proficiency in data collection, reporting, and analysis to support program development and client advocacy.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities to identify, address, and resolve issues efficiently.
