Position Overview

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

The Agricultural Education Coordinator, under the guidance of the project director, is primarily tasked with the creation and oversight of small-scale production plots aimed at showcasing sustainable farming practices. This role involves collaboration with the Sherrod Institute staff and various external partners to strategize, implement, and manage production plots developed in conjunction with academic institutions. Effective communication with the community is essential to foster engagement in demonstrations and educational events at the Sherrod Institute. Target audiences may include established limited-resource farmers, novice producers, and representatives from governmental bodies. The majority of the responsibilities will be conducted at the Sherrod Institute, which operates as a working farm and event venue that currently supports the cultivation of pecans, satsuma oranges, and various vegetables. Some outreach initiatives will necessitate visits to local agricultural operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising sustainable farming installations and daily operational activities.
  • Maintaining and servicing all demonstration plots and support systems across 50 acres.
  • Coordinating logistics for onsite demonstrations, outreach, and training events.
  • Collaborating with local agricultural organizations to enhance outreach and provide technical support to underserved farmers.
  • Managing administrative tasks related to plot oversight and services offered by the Sherrod Institute.
  • Establishing a communication network among local farmers to disseminate educational opportunities and best farming practices, utilizing various communication channels to promote events and celebrate achievements.
  • Adhering to regulations and maintaining records to ensure project goals are met.
  • Developing and implementing safety protocols to guarantee adherence to best practice safety measures for workers and visitors involved in project demonstrations and training.
  • Executing additional duties as assigned or necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture or a related field – preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of direct experience in vegetable or row-crop production and/or orchard management (required).
  • Experience working on a farm – preferred.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by a state authority – required.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions, including high temperatures, humidity, and exposure to insects.
  • Flexibility to work beyond standard hours, including weekends and evenings, as necessary to fulfill responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely operate farm equipment and use sharp tools.
  • Strong time management, prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, email, and messaging platforms.
  • Good clerical and bookkeeping abilities.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Adaptability to switch between tasks of varying nature without loss of efficiency or composure.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent standing and walking.
  • Occasional sitting.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Occasional reaching above shoulder height.
  • Frequent stooping and squatting.
