Position Summary

The Middle School English and History Educator is responsible for designing and delivering engaging instruction that captivates all learners while fostering a secure, supportive, and challenging educational atmosphere. Educators at Making Waves Academy (MWA) are expected to collaborate with peers to create lesson and unit plans that empower students to achieve and surpass proficiency in academic standards. Additionally, they play a vital role in nurturing a positive school culture both inside and outside the classroom, including during lunch, recess, and hallway supervision, while consistently upholding school-wide norms and expectations.

Typical Responsibilities Include:

  • Teaching 4-5 classes
  • Advising 1 group of students
  • Conducting 2 flex periods
  • Having 1 prep period daily, averaging 5-6 per week
  • Managing approximately 25 students per class

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Duties:

  • Submit weekly plans, syllabi, unit outlines, and scope and sequence aligned with Common Core and California State standards, ensuring they are differentiated to engage and challenge students.
  • Implement a structured student management plan in accordance with MWA's system.
  • Develop and revise culturally relevant, standards-based lesson plans that integrate literacy and writing instruction.
  • Differentiate instruction based on diverse learning styles and developmental stages.
  • Actively participate in mandatory morning meetings and professional development to enhance instructional practices.

Assessment Responsibilities:

  • Create and utilize formative and summative assessments that prepare students for unit tests, finals, and standardized assessments.
  • Manage a formalized engagement plan for students and parents, measuring social and academic growth quarterly.
  • Design a variety of performance assessments aligned with lesson objectives and state standards.
  • Analyze student data to inform instructional practices.

Classroom Management and Communication:

  • Establish and maintain an organized classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Implement classroom behavior management strategies to ensure a respectful and inclusive atmosphere.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff regarding student progress and classroom activities.
  • Enforce school policies to maintain discipline and safety.
  • Supervise students as a Mandated Reporter to ensure their safety.

Additional Expectations:

Mission Alignment:

  • Engage with staff, faculty, students, and families in the diverse MWA community.
  • Participate actively in the school community through professional development, performances, assemblies, and extracurricular activities.

Other Duties:

In addition to core teaching responsibilities, the educator will also instruct students in foundational coursework during flex periods and advise a group of students, including conducting one-on-one check-ins and supporting social-emotional learning.

Work Environment:

This position operates within a classroom setting, utilizing standard educational equipment such as art supplies, laptops, and whiteboards.

Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience is preferred, but related experience may be considered.
  • Experience working with historically underserved communities is highly valued.
  • Ability to create effective lesson plans and analyze educational data.
  • Understanding of restorative justice practices is essential.
  • Valid California Single or Multiple Subject Teaching Credential is required.
  • Bachelor's Degree is mandatory.
