Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing direct patient care and technical expertise to patients in a clinical setting.

Under the general supervision of the clinic manager and the physician director, the Lead Ophthalmic Technician will perform an array of measurements and ophthalmic testing as requested by the physician and medical staff. The incumbent will also provide feedback to the clinic manager specific to technician hiring and evaluations, and administer daily work assignments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care and technical expertise to patients in a clinical setting.

  • Oversee the work of other Ophthalmic Techs, including scheduling work, establishing work standards, and monitoring progress and work flow.
  • Assist in the training of new staff members.
  • Provide input into supervisor's actions, including performance appraisals.
  • Accurately and correctly measure auto refraction and corneal curvature using keratometer.
  • Accurately and correctly measure patient's color vision and visual acuity using potential visual acuity meter or Retinometer.
  • Accurately and correctly measure patient's intraocular pressure, color vision, visual acuity.
  • Accurately and correctly perform and record visual acuity, both distance and near, used pinhole and appropriate.
  • Apply knowledge of principles of growth and development across the life span for population(s) cared for.
  • Assist physician with patient examinations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the indications, pathology and basic interpretations of test being performed.
  • Demonstrate skill in applying the principles of aseptic technique.
  • Follow policy/procedure to instill eye drops. Administer medication only after checking medication and dose with licensed person.
  • Perform eye irrigations according to physician's order and written procedure.
  • Promptly and accurately report patient's concerns and symptoms, reactions, changes (appropriate to age) to licensed clinic personnel.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent client relationship, exhibit exemplary interpersonal skills and exercise sound judgment and professionalism in business and personnel matters.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to solve problems and identify solutions.
  • Knowledge and use of eye drops and medications.
  • Knowledge and use of ophthalmic eye instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic environment and laboratory controls, methods, procedures and regulations.

Compensation

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $88,587.20 to $100,432.80.
