As a specialist, you will play a crucial role in supporting the country during natural disaster relief efforts and protecting the nation from chemical and biological warfare.

The Army National Guard offers a unique opportunity to develop valuable skills and experience in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering. As a Chemical Operations Specialist, you will learn to expertly handle nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) detection and decontamination equipment. You will also be trained to maintain disaster plans, operate and perform maintenance on smoke generating equipment, and coordinate with civilian personnel on emergency procedures.

You will be trained in the following areas:

  1. Operation of CBRN decontamination, defense, detection, and monitoring equipment
  2. Wear and use of protective equipment
  3. Hazardous Material Certification (at the awareness level)

To be successful in this role, you will need to have strong communication skills, be able to work calmly under tremendous stress, and have a strong interest in algebra, chemistry, physics, geometry, and trigonometry. You will also need to be able to plan and organize effectively.

After 10 weeks of Basic Training, you will attend 11 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), which will include a combination of hands-on and classroom training. During this training, you will learn defensive procedures for NBC warfare and preparation of emergency plans.

In order to be eligible for this role, you must:

  • Be between the ages of 17 and 35
  • Have a high school diploma or a GED certificate
  • Be able to pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards
