Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Assistant to join our team at the Recanti/Miller Transplant Institute. As a Medical Assistant, you will provide clinical office support to physicians and surgeons, and perform patient care and administrative duties necessary to deliver quality patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical support to physicians and surgeons, including performing venipuncture and/or EKGs, checking schedules and organizing patient flow, and accompanying patients to exam/procedure rooms.
  • Assist patients with walking, transferring, and dressing, and collect and process specimens and point of care testing.
  • Assist physicians with various procedures, take vital signs, and relay instructions to patients and families.
  • Fulfill clerical responsibilities, including sending and receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, and completing forms and requisitions as needed.
  • Manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately, and enter orders into the electronic medical record (EMR) system or prepare prescription refill requests on behalf of the physician.
  • Inventories, orders, or re-stocks medical supplies as applicable, and provides set-up of examination rooms and instruments in accordance with proper sterilization techniques.
  • Maintains logging systems as required for refrigeration of medications, point of care testing, sterilization process, crash cart, point of care testing, or others as needed.
  • Checks expiration dates on all medications and medical supplies, and disposes of them appropriately as per institution policy.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures, and complies with legal regulations.
  • Complies with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation, and other hazardous substances.
  • Assists in the maintenance of medical charts, including filing, Op Reports, test results, and home care forms.
  • May schedule surgeries/procedures or work in conjunction with Surgical Coordinator verifying times with patients, preparing charts, pre-admissions, and consent forms as necessary.
  • May perform proficient phlebotomy duties, and may perform appointment scheduling and registration for patients, as well as updating patient demographic and insurance information.
  • May maintain, adjust, and confirm patient office schedule, and may check and verify and update insurance information utilizing internal or web sources.
  • May perform and verify pre-certification for procedures as necessary, and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED with completion of an approved Medical Assistant certificate course.
  • Certified Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Three to nine months of healthcare experience preferred, with venipuncture and EKG skills required.
  • Certificate of Medical Assistant training or equivalent.
  • Heartsaver Certification from American Heart Association and/or BCLS.
