POSITION OVERVIEW

This role requires a high degree of technical expertise and the application of that expertise to laboratory testing, clinical significance, and intricate problem-solving abilities.

This position acts as a departmental resource and is accountable for ensuring compliance with all relevant laboratory accrediting bodies and regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA '88, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA).

Responsibilities may include the collection, receipt, and processing of biological samples within the laboratory.

All tasks must be performed in accordance with established protocols, procedures, regulatory and accreditation standards, as well as applicable professional guidelines.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts testing accurately and promptly following established protocols and performance metrics, with a knowledge level appropriate for the testing performed. Responsible for initiating, calibrating, and ensuring the accuracy of procedures and equipment. Actively engages in problem-solving initiatives within the department, utilizing advanced decision-making skills. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and application of all computer systems utilized in the department. Ensures compliance with accrediting organizations and regulatory standards. Capable of assuming leadership responsibilities in the absence of departmental leadership.

Identifies, validates, and assists in monitoring abnormal patient and/or quality control results. Guarantees the accuracy of test outcomes. Participates in identifying and documenting deviations from established procedures.

Recognizes the need for and engages in departmental and system-wide process enhancement and quality assurance initiatives, including assisting in monitoring departmental productivity and quality indicators.

Oversees inventory management and aids in providing financial insights for the department. Actively contributes to financial performance improvements aimed at reducing costs, enhancing productivity, and elevating service quality.

Contributes to additional departmental/system projects. Actively involved in training departmental staff.

Participates in at least one committee or team or engages in at least one special project identified by departmental management.

Maintains awareness of the medical/legal implications of professional actions. May assist in the orientation, training, and competency assessment of new employees. Provides input for competency evaluations and annual assessments for staff within appropriate timelines. Completes training modules for newly hired or transferred personnel.

NOTE:

Unless the employee meets the minimum qualifications set by CAP for a technical consultant, they may not oversee competency assessments.

Acts as a departmental resource by providing educational information to both internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrates advanced verbal and written communication skills. Attends and participates in staff meetings. Exhibits preceptor and coaching abilities and fosters a constructive environment that promotes learning and development.

May process and/or prepare patient samples as necessary, including: 1) specimen collection 2) general laboratory specimen processing and 3) referral laboratory processing.

Ensures correct patient and specimen identification and maintains specimen integrity.

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY

Internal Customers:
System employees, physicians, nursing staff. External Customers - Nurses, physicians, office personnel, vendors, service representatives, etc. Engaged in interdepartmental communication and activities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Must be able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.

Utilizes material handling equipment to push/pull up to 75 pounds and is required to lift, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds.

Requires manual dexterity. Must adhere to standard precautions due to potential exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, electrical, and biological hazards. Ability to distinguish colors and to follow directions and assimilate instructions quickly. Requires use of personal computers, printers, copiers, telephones, faxes, and department-specific equipment.

Must exhibit skills in exceptional customer service, positive performance reviews, and successful completion of on-site competency evaluations and/or assessments as defined by the department.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science/medical technology,

OR
Bachelor's degree in chemical or biological science (transcripts may be reviewed to determine eligibility) AND certification (MLS or categorical).


Foreign-educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF (International Education Research Foundation) or another nationally recognized credentialing agency for review to determine eligibility.


For certain specialty disciplines ONLY (Toxicology, HLA, HCTT, etc.) where no certification is available from a certifying agency, a bachelor's degree with one year of experience in that discipline is required.

Demonstrated competency in phlebotomy in applicable departments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MLS/MT or categorical certification (ASCP, AMT, HEW, AAB).

Basic understanding of specimen requirements and familiarity with medical terminology.

Prior experience with phlebotomy and processing.
