Department Overview

The Gas Operations department is dedicated to ensuring the safe and dependable delivery of natural gas to our clientele. This unit oversees all facets of gas distribution and transmission operations, encompassing planning, engineering, maintenance, construction, restoration, and emergency response.

Position Summary

This role is represented by IBEW Local 1245, an organization with over a century of experience advocating for employees within PG&E. This position is subject to collective bargaining agreements.

The Electric Locator is a skilled professional with Journeyman Electrician qualifications, tasked with the accurate, safe, and efficient identification of underground utilities, including electric and gas lines. This role also involves standby responsibilities when contractors are excavating near critical facilities. Duties include completing necessary documentation and serving as a liaison to third-party contractors, customers, and private landowners. The Electric Locator may also perform gas locate and mark duties as needed in conjunction with electric locate and mark assignments. Standby work for non-company construction jobs is typically handled by Gas Compliance classifications but may involve Electric Locators if additional resources are required and if they are DOT operator qualified. The responsibilities related to damage prevention are not exclusive to this classification. Electric Locators must undergo training and meet initial and annual qualifications.

This position is intended to fill vacancies in the Bay Area region.

DOT Classification

This position is classified under DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.

Commitment

As per Letter of Agreement 16-28, Electric Locators are committed to this classification for a period of 24 months.

Compensation

The hourly rate for this position is $62.91, reflective of the local job market. This rate is influenced by various factors, including skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.

Job Responsibilities

  • Complete necessary documentation and act as a liaison to third-party contractors, customers, and private landowners.
  • Perform standby duties when contractors excavate near critical facilities.
  • Conduct accurate, safe, and efficient locate and mark duties for underground utilities, including electric and gas.
  • Engage in DOT Operations/Maintenance and Emergency tasks.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License is necessary.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Safe driving skills in all weather and road conditions.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Completion of an IBEW/Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) sanctioned Electrician training program.
  • Ability to wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous military experience.
  • Electrician Journey certification.
  • Manhole safety training.
  • Experience in PG&E construction or utility operations.
  • Five years of journey-level experience in industrial electrical construction.
  • Familiarity with electronic or mechanical equipment.
  • Instrumentation and control experience.
  • Electrical experience in substations or power generation.
  • High voltage experience.
  • Experience with testing equipment and troubleshooting.
  • Prior experience with utility locate and mark tasks.
