Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Police Sergeant to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a Police Sergeant, you will be responsible for supervising the operation of our police force, including making work assignments, updating and reviewing time records, efficiency reports, and accident records.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervision and Leadership
    • Schedule and supervise police officers, providing guidance and monitoring to ensure duties are performed in accordance with established rules and regulations.
    • Participate in the hiring process and evaluate officers using the MWRD appraisal system.
    • Grant days off and approve vacations.
  • Equipment and Facility Management
    • Ensure that equipment (weapons, vehicles, radios) and facilities are kept clean, in good order, and accounted for.
    • Enforce policies and procedures strictly.
  • Incident Response and Investigation
    • Issue offense/incident control numbers, classify offenses/incidents, and approve offense/incident reports.
    • Review officer activity reports.
    • Investigate incidents and assign officers as needed.
  • Communication and Community Relations
    • Receive calls from operating personnel, other police agencies, police officers, and citizens.
    • Respond to requests from other agencies and assist officers as needed.
    • Utilize the LEADS network for licenses, name checks, and criminal histories.
  • Special Assignments and Security Analysis
    • Conduct security analysis and inspections of MWRD property and facilities.
    • Carry out special assignments, investigations, and studies as assigned.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Two years (60 semester hours of credit) at an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of experience in law enforcement or military police service.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
Substitution and Promotional Requirements

Additional experience as a sworn law enforcement officer or as a member of the military police may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.

Civil service status as a Police Officer is required for promotional consideration.
