Role: Aviation Communications Operator

Organization: Airport Minority Advisory Council


Number of Positions: 16 (Additional vacancies may arise based on budget considerations)

Starting Salary: $58,560; Grade I-14


Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage an assigned shift at a communications console for police, fire, or security operations, responding to requests for public safety services.
  • Gather critical information from callers to assess the nature and urgency of incidents, inputting data into a computer-aided dispatch system.
  • Coordinate the dispatch of police, fire, and emergency medical services to incidents within the airport vicinity.
  • Utilize communication equipment to maintain contact with dispatched personnel and additional resources as necessary.
  • Adhere to established protocols for prioritizing public safety resource deployment in response to incidents.
  • Monitor access control systems and respond to security alarms, ensuring the safety of airport facilities.
  • Review security footage to identify breaches and coordinate appropriate responses.
  • Communicate emergency weather updates and other critical information to airport staff as required.
  • Alert supervisors to emergency situations and incidents that necessitate escalated responses.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Work Location: O'Hare and Midway International Airports

Work Hours: Various shifts available, including night and day shifts.

Career Service: This position is classified within the career service.


Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) with three years of experience in public safety call processing or emergency service dispatching.
  • Must achieve Emergency Medical Dispatch certification from the State of Illinois within six months of employment.
  • Must obtain LEADS certification within six months of employment.
  • Successful candidates will undergo a drug screening, background investigation, and security threat assessment.

Selection Process:

All candidates must complete an interview and a Willingness and Ability Questionnaire. Preference will be given to those with relevant experience in police and fire operations, telecommunications dispatching, and proficiency in operating security systems.
