Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Utility Instrumentation Technician I to join our team at the City of Sunrise FL. As a key member of our utilities department, you will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing high and low voltage electrical/electronic systems found in our water and sewage treatment plants and pumping systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, alter, repair, and maintain high and low voltage motors, generators, switchgear, motor controllers, transformers, wiring system electronic components, and other related equipment.
  • Check electrical ladder diagrams for repairs on electrical equipment.
  • Perform electrical connections and disconnects.
  • Conduct thermos scans.
  • Install FVD in water and waste plants.
  • Maintain accurate records of the maintenance and repair history of electrical equipment.
  • Order parts for repairs.
  • Set up generators for City functions.
  • Respond to emergency calls.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of GED equivalency diploma.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program as an electrician and attainment of journeyman rank.
  • Previous experience as an electrician, preferably in both new construction and maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Florida or Broward County Journeyman Electrical license or a Master Electrical license or equivalent.
  • Certifications preferred: Bucket Truck Certification; and Forklift Certification.
Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a plant environment. Tasks are regularly performed with varied amounts of exposure to adverse environmental conditions indoors and outdoors. Noise, heat, cold, and rain may be encountered during the course of repairs to equipment and infrastructure located throughout the utility system.

Physical Requirements
  • Physical effort in light to moderate work, which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects and materials up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Prolonged sitting and/or standing will be required.
  • Ability and agility to move in and around switchgear and other electrical equipment and components without endangering self or others.
  • Ability to climb over or crawl under equipment such as field piping, plant process piping, and other systems throughout the utility.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions of electrical work.
  • Knowledge of the installation, alteration, repair, and maintenance of both high and low voltage electrical and electronic systems and equipment found in the plant of assignment.
  • Knowledge of circuitry and motor control installation and repair.
  • Knowledge of local and national electrical codes.
  • Skill in the use and care of electrical tools and equipment.
  • Skill in using department software.
  • Ability to install and test electrical systems and equipment and to locate and repair defects.
  • Ability to work from electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to physically perform required duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department officials, other employees, and the general public.
