Job Responsibilities and Qualifications

The Certified Respiratory Care Specialist is responsible for coordinating and delivering high-quality, patient-focused respiratory care in alignment with departmental needs and adhering to the standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. As an essential member of the patient care team, the specialist conducts various diagnostic assessments and therapeutic interventions while monitoring patients who require both invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and document patient evaluations, including breath sounds, airway integrity, and cuff pressure.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures to assess the necessity for and response to respiratory therapy.
  • Administer respiratory treatments, including oxygen therapy, aerosolized medications, and chest physiotherapy.
  • Assist in the placement of artificial airways and manage mechanical ventilation.
  • Monitor patients for therapeutic outcomes and alert healthcare providers in case of adverse reactions.
  • Support the transportation of patients reliant on ventilators.
  • React to emergency situations, ensuring airway security and adequate ventilation during resuscitation efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Required Education: Associate's Degree in Respiratory Care or completion of a Respiratory Care Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
  • Preferred Education: Associate's Degree in Respiratory Care or completion of a Respiratory Care Program accredited by CoARC with extensive experience.
  • Required License: Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC); a current North Carolina License issued by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board (NCRCB); and current Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Preferred Licenses: Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
