About the Position

The City of San Jose is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief of Staff to support the Councilmember in their duties. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in policy work, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise the Councilmember on policy, budget, and community matters.
  • Manage the day-to-day office operations, including supervising staff and implementing office projects.
  • Oversee budgetary, legislative, and strategic planning processes.
  • Manage communications and public relations, interfacing with media, governmental officials, department directors, business leaders, advocacy groups, constituents, and others on behalf of the Councilmember.
  • Respond to other matters as needed.
Requirements
  • Any combination of training, education, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to advise and support the Councilmember on matters of constituent services, public policy, community outreach and engagement, and communications.
  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in political science, public administration, business administration, journalism, public relations, or related field.
  • Typically requires five (5) or more years of government or public service experience.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's license may be required.
Desirable Qualifications
  • At least five (5) or more years of professional management experience.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to write in a concise, direct, and professional style.
  • Knowledge of the City of San Jose, City government functions, and the City Council legislative process.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with other staff members in a small office.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment with changing priorities and deadlines.
Selection Process

The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to the Job Specific Questions. Only the candidates whose backgrounds best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Additional phases of the selection process may consist of one or more interviews.
