Job Summary

The Custodial Worker - Environmental Services will provide a clean and safe environment for patients, families, visitors, and medical center employees. This role will perform various housekeeping and heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout all Hospital buildings and surrounding areas, as well as maintain effective communications and working relationships with customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain a pleasant and cooperative service attitude towards patients, families, visitors, medical center staff, co-workers, and management at all times.
  • Perform thorough daily cleaning in assigned areas, following established schedules and using prescribed procedures.
  • High dust all above shoulder surfaces and ceiling vents/lights.
  • Damp wipe all ledges, furnishings, furniture, lights, shelves, light switches, telephones, door knobs, etc.
  • Spot clean walls, doors, and windows/glass.
  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms/restrooms to include sinks, toilets, showers, tubs, floors, pipes, mirrors, urinals, etc, and restock disposable items.
  • Dust mop floors using a chemically treated mop.
  • Vacuum carpeted floors and upholstery.
  • Remove spots from carpet.
  • Damp mop floors using prescribed cleaning agents.
  • Inspect work and report maintenance needs in patient rooms, exam/treatment rooms, restrooms, offices, labs, departments, public areas, and ancillary areas.
  • Perform check-out/transfer cleaning in assigned areas and/or as assigned by supervision.
  • Perform Between-Case-Cleaning in Labor & Delivery and the main Operating Room.
  • Terminal Cleaning in Labor & Delivery and the Operating Room.
  • Wash ceiling surfaces; clean elevators and stairwells; clean parking lots, garages, entrances, and sweep sidewalks.
  • Wash interior windows; defrost and clean refrigerators.
  • Take down and rehang drapes, shower curtains, and cubical curtains.
  • Transport trash in bulk trash carts to the back dock; prepare medical waste trash and operate the compactor equipment.
  • Use mechanical cleaning equipment to maintain cleanliness and appearance of hard surfaces, floors, and carpets.
  • Move and/or assist in moving furniture for setting up/breaking down conference/classrooms.
  • Conduct general daily inspections of all assigned areas and make initial assessments of problems in the environment.
  • Report identified problems to the service center.
  • Utilize a wide variety of institutional and industrial cleaning and maintenance chemicals and power equipment according to departmental and OSHA regulations.
  • Complete scheduled and assigned tasks under normal conditions within prescribed time parameters with accuracy and consistency.
  • Present a professional image at all times.
  • Make effective use of departmental/medical center resources to minimize waste and prevent damage.
  • Demonstrate a constant awareness of unsafe or potentially unsafe working conditions and make every effort to correct and report hazards to the proper authority.
  • Accept responsibility for ensuring the working environment is safe and in good repair.
  • Know and respond appropriately to safety, fire, and disaster procedures.
  • Demonstrate initiative in job performance through suggesting methods/procedures to improve quality, service, productivity, and efficiency.
  • Participate in appropriate committees as assigned.
  • Complete all required annual education requirements through Georgetown University Hospital resources.
  • Work cooperatively with other medical center departments to provide services to customers.
  • Maintain a good work attendance and punctuality record in accordance with department policies.
Requirements
  • Completion of Tenth grade required and High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Prior work experience not required.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn occupational hazards and the safety precautions of the job and the application of universal (isolation) precautions for patients.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to relate to staff, visitors, and patients with varying degrees of illness.
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility to function in a setting which may be stressful or change unexpectedly due to a patient's condition.
  • Customer-focused with a service attitude.
