The Senior Credit Underwriter is responsible for evaluating credit risk for intricate and significant credit relationships while managing a Middle Market Banking portfolio. This role involves regular client engagement, overseeing portfolio risk, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards. A vital aspect of this position is the proactive identification of potential credit issues and industry shifts.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Credit Evaluation: Directs the comprehensive commercial underwriting process, both internally and externally, with clients and prospects. Structures, documents, and underwrites all transactions, handling the most complex deals independently. Conducts thorough analyses of financial statements, forecasts, and business strategies; identifies and addresses key risks. Proposes suitable loan structures and maintains expertise in the bank's ancillary products. Ensures adherence to risk assessment and regulatory compliance.
  • Portfolio Oversight: Manages the assigned portfolio by tracking performance and trends, defining credit solutions for clients, identifying challenges, and ensuring follow-through for resolution. Responsible for maintaining risk rating accuracy, conducting annual reviews, financial statement analysis, compliance, and regulatory evaluations. Oversees all amendments and waivers within the portfolio.
  • Client Engagement: Enhances client relationships through proactive outreach, applying knowledge of credit policies, pricing, and structuring to devise solutions.
  • Industry Expertise: Maintains a deep understanding of corporate, investment, and commercial banking solutions, market dynamics, and business drivers. Shares insights and knowledge across the team.
  • Team Leadership: Manages tasks by coordinating with assigned Associates and Analysts. Provides mentorship and guidance to junior Portfolio Managers, Associates, and Analysts.
  • Independent Decision-Making: Offers current and forward-looking risk assessments on clients. Prepares risk recommendations for approval.
  • Complex Problem Solving: Focuses on managing intricate names within the portfolio and challenging legal structures.
  • Influencing and Negotiation: Develops independent viewpoints and presents recommendations to decision-makers. Mentors junior team members and collaborates effectively.
  • Project Management: Manages a substantial client portfolio and actively contributes to initiatives beyond daily responsibilities that benefit the team.
  • Impact and Risk Management: Delivers robust credit and underwriting analyses, emphasizing key risk factors related to credit and operational aspects.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance or a related field with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in commercial credit analysis.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Exceptional credit analysis skills with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage workflow in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in a similar capacity within a commercial financial institution or equivalent.
  • Expertise in the industry and familiarity with Truist Bank's operating systems, including COMPASS and other commercial applications.
