Job Overview

The Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter serves as a key representative for Westfield within a designated territory of agencies, overseeing and managing a profitable portfolio of Commercial Lines business with exceptional technical underwriting expertise. This position involves strategic territory planning, performance evaluation, and agency management to optimize production, profitability, and client retention. The Underwriter plays a pivotal role in assessing new business prospects from various angles, including exposure, pricing, service, and sales, while fostering collaboration among teams and mentoring junior underwriters and agencies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Underwrites and oversees a portfolio of commercial lines business for the assigned territory, ensuring strong relationships are built and maintained to achieve profit and revenue targets.
  • Acts as the primary liaison for designated agencies, leading business planning and managing account inventories effectively.
  • Develops a robust inventory of new business well ahead of policy expiration to meet profit and revenue goals.
  • Facilitates monthly strategy discussions with underwriting and service teams regarding individual renewals.
  • Regularly reviews new accounts in the pipeline, assessing opportunities and determining the best approach for account management while establishing strong underwriting relationships with policyholders.
  • Collaborates on underwriting new and renewal Commercial Lines accounts, pre-qualifying clients and guiding the account team in evaluating new business opportunities.
  • Coordinates meetings for collaboration on larger, more complex accounts in line with company protocols.
  • Assesses loss exposures, determines pricing, and makes acceptance or rejection decisions based on established underwriting guidelines.
  • Documents underwriting decisions, maintains supporting information in compliance with audit standards throughout the policy lifecycle.
  • Completes the Account Summary document, detailing account specifics, and conducts post-mortem analyses on accounts that were not acquired to enhance sales strategies and competitive insights.
  • Reviews and approves or declines underwriting authority referrals from junior underwriters or managers, and participates in state planning processes, including rate reviews and annual projections.
  • Ensures commitments to accounts are upheld, maintaining regular communication with policyholders.
  • Establishes effective communication regarding underwriting practices, growth objectives, regulatory issues, industry trends, and agency relations.
  • Participates in quality assurance audits and contributes to projects aimed at improving underwriting practices, including coverage and pricing strategies.
  • Travels as necessary within the assigned territory, utilizing a company vehicle for coverage, which may involve short-notice travel or daily driving tasks as required.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in Property & Casualty Commercial Underwriting.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a driving record that meets company standards.
