Nashville, Tennessee, United States Tennessee Higher Education Initiative Full time

The Tennessee Higher Education Initiative (THEI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming systems of injustice and fostering opportunities for empowerment and achievement through education, support, and advocacy for individuals affected by the justice system.

As a grassroots community organization, THEI is committed to principles of harm reduction, healing, and prioritizing the lived experiences of those we serve.

We are engaged in reimagining and constructing the future we aspire to achieve through systemic work and direct service.
THEI is currently seeking a full-time Educational Program Coordinator, who will be responsible for managing the daily operations of THEI's Academic Programs within Tennessee correctional facilities.

Under the guidance of the THEI Director of Education Programs, the Educational Program Coordinator will collaborate closely with the administration and staff at our partner facilities, as well as points of contact at our partner colleges to coordinate and facilitate Bachelor's and associate degree programs in these settings.

The Coordinator will assist with all facets of program administration and logistics on-site, including providing in-person support services directly to incarcerated students who may have limited access to communication or information.

This full-time, exempt role will necessitate significant travel by car on a weekly basis to correctional facilities and partner colleges. The ideal candidate should be located in Middle Tennessee. Aside from travel, the Coordinator's primary office will be at THEI's Nashville location.

Priority will be given to candidates who exhibit a strong commitment to delivering educational opportunities to underserved populations and who understand THEI's mission as part of a broader social justice movement.

We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in secondary or post-secondary education and/or in a correctional environment; flexibility in work hours, including the ability to work evenings and weekends; excellent organizational and time management skills; and a strong dedication to breaking cycles of poverty and incarceration.

Familiarity with Tennessee Department of Correction practices and/or knowledge of the public higher education system in Tennessee is advantageous, though not required.

Lastly, the ideal candidate must possess a reliable vehicle, be willing to travel to correctional facilities across Tennessee, and be comfortable working in a correctional environment while collaborating with incarcerated individuals.

We encourage individuals who have been affected by the criminal justice system to consider applying.

Key Responsibilities:
Stakeholder Group #1: Students
• Build and maintain relationships with all THEI students across multiple cohorts.
• Conduct regular meetings with students; advocate on their behalf.
• Ensure effective communication of student needs and concerns to respective partners and work towards resolving challenges.
• Oversee program logistics to guarantee a smooth transition for spring, summer, and fall semesters annually.

• Facilitate the College Prep program and manage the annual admissions process, which requires meticulous record-keeping, juggling multiple priorities, exceptional written communication skills, and strong attention to detail.

• Ensure students have access to necessary educational materials for their courses and that professors have the required technology and resources to effectively teach.
• Manage student records and instructional materials.
• Log contact notes promptly, utilizing Salesforce and Google Drive.
• Ensure all educational information and data are accurately maintained in both electronic and paper files.
• Collaborate with the community to create and facilitate student success and academic workshops tailored to student interests.
• Lead and manage student council groups.

Stakeholder Group #2: Correctional Facilities

• Build and maintain rapport with prison administration and staff.
• Stay informed about current events within the facilities to remain adaptable and responsive to emerging needs.
• Oversee on-site implementation of college programs at assigned facilities.
• Identify new volunteer partners and manage relationships with correctional facilities, including scheduling faculty orientations and training sessions.
• Problem-solve swiftly on a regular basis, given the unpredictable nature of the correctional environment.

Stakeholder Group #3: College Partners

• Assist college partners with the distribution and collection of course materials and supplies.
• Serve as a liaison between incarcerated students and the college, communicating key information and advocating for student and college interests as appropriate.
• Maintain regular communication with faculty to ensure smooth course implementation and mitigate potential disruptions.
• Support the execution of the college's administrative processes, such as student rosters, roster changes, course additions, and withdrawals.
• Collaborate with college partners to host annual graduation ceremonies within correctional facilities.
• Facilitate Faculty Training and post-evaluation collection for all partner instructors prior to the start of each semester.

Qualifications:
• Minimum education requirement of an associate degree; Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred (e.g., Education, Counseling Psychology, Program Administration, Social Services).
• At least 1 year of experience as a teacher, trainer, advisor, prison educator, or in a similar role.
• Proficiency in Google Suite, particularly Google Calendar, Sheets, Docs, and Slides.
• Ability and willingness to organize and manage data effectively.
• Exceptional administrative skills, along with superb written and verbal communication abilities.
• Valid driver's license and the capacity to travel to and from correctional facilities regularly.
• Flexible schedule, including the ability to work evenings and occasional Saturdays.
• Timeliness in email correspondence.
• Commitment to relationship-building and a passion for creating partnerships with diverse populations.
• Enthusiasm for creative problem-solving.
• Willingness to navigate complex situations with intentionality and sound judgment.
• Thoughtfulness and critical understanding of the social and historical context of THEI's work.
• Commitment to self-care, social justice, and equity.
• Emotional intelligence with the ability to maintain healthy boundaries, professionalism with the incarcerated student population, and adherence to guidelines from the Tennessee Department of Correction.
• Flexibility to meet student needs and adapt to organizational changes while taking appropriate initiative.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups, balancing needs and employing objectivity; effectiveness in both independent and team settings.
• Must be eligible to be a badged contractor for the Tennessee Department of Correction.

Additional Information: This position is full-time and exempt, offering a starting salary of $50,000 per year, along with travel reimbursements, comprehensive medical/dental insurance, a monthly wellness stipend, a Simple IRA with employer match, and generous paid leave and holidays.

The review of applications will commence immediately.

THEI is an equal opportunity employer; all applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran, or disability status.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume with "Educational Program Coordinator" in the subject line.
