Compensation Structure

Hourly rates range from:

  • $49.65 for the 533.2 level
  • $59.49 for the 533.3 level

Note: Compensation is influenced by various factors including education, experience, and market conditions.

Position Summary

We are seeking qualified candidates for the role of Mechanical Technologist/Senior Mechanical Technologist to provide specialized technical assistance in the field of pulsed power. This role involves supporting experimental research, developing prototype equipment, and creating custom diagnostic sensors, particularly in high-voltage and high-current applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, fabricate, and maintain moderately complex mechanical systems and components, including material selection and solution determination.
  • Interpret drawings and verbal instructions to assemble and test mechanical designs.
  • Offer technical support to engineers and senior technical staff in laboratory experiment preparation and coordination.
  • Utilize conventional machining tools such as lathes and mills to manufacture components.
  • Apply knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to address mechanical challenges.
  • Set up and troubleshoot equipment, ensuring maintenance of pressure and vacuum systems.
  • Uphold a high standard of safety in laboratory environments, conducting routine inspections and audits.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Additional Responsibilities for 533.3 Level

  • Handle the design and assembly of complex mechanical systems, including high vacuum systems.
  • Conduct vacuum leak checks using specialized detection equipment.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation and experimental records.
  • Adhere to operational and safety protocols while ensuring cleanliness and readiness of work areas.
  • Work independently from drawings and instructions to assemble and test mechanical designs.

Qualifications

  • U.S. citizenship is required to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
  • Associate degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering technology, or equivalent experience.
  • Intermediate understanding of machine tool technology and operation.
  • Experience in designing moderately complex mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with high-pressure systems and documentation maintenance.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks or ProE) for 3D modeling and 2D drawing generation.
  • Willingness to travel for offsite experimental tests.

Additional Qualifications for 533.3 Level

  • Advanced skills in machine tool technology and precision measurement.
  • Capability to solve complex technical problems using established guidelines.
  • Experience in conceptualizing and implementing complex hardware solutions.
  • Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to team members.
