Compensation Range
$110,700 - $170,556 Annually
$110,700 - $142,128 Annually for the SES.1 level
$132,810 - $170,556 Annually for the SES.2 level
Please note that this compensation range serves as a general guideline.

Various factors influence starting salaries, including education, experience, market conditions, and internal equity.

Position Overview
We have several openings for Mechanical Engineers to engage in both new and ongoing initiatives. Our work includes:

  • Providing engineering design expertise in nuclear weapon systems
  • Conducting experimental device design and testing
  • Fabricating and assembling components
  • Assessing nuclear stockpile components for maintenance and evaluation

You will collaborate with colleagues from other National Laboratories, Production Agencies, and various government departments.

These roles are situated within the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), which supports Strategic Deterrence Programs. Depending on your assignment, a hybrid work schedule may be available, allowing for a blend of in-person and remote work.

Key Responsibilities
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will:

  • Define engineering requirements and develop conceptual designs
  • Oversee detailed design processes and component fabrication
  • Prepare safety and engineering documentation
  • Participate in engineering testing and analyze results
  • Create detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets
  • Collaborate with internal and external organizations
  • Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Additional Responsibilities for SES.2 Level
At the SES.2 level, you will:

  • Apply comprehensive engineering knowledge to address technical challenges
  • Conduct independent technical tasks for complex issues
  • Select appropriate methods and evaluation criteria for project outcomes
  • Provide guidance to less-experienced team members

Qualifications
To qualify, you must:

  • Be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance
  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Possess fundamental knowledge in at least two of the following areas: engineering hardware design, systems engineering, manufacturing techniques, testing processes
  • Have experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
We desire candidates with:

  • A Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Experience interpreting specifications and mechanical drawings
  • Knowledge of project management practices
  • Experience in environments with stringent safety and security policies
