DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Our engineering division is structured into four key departments: Current Product Engineering (CPE), New Product Engineering (NPE), Product Validation, and the Colorado Technology Center (CTC).

The Current Product Engineering (CPE) Department focuses on two primary objectives:

  • Enhancing and optimizing designs for our existing product platforms throughout the vehicle lifecycle.
  • Delivering tailored, fleet-specific designs to meet the operational requirements of our clients.

The Sustaining Engineering group is dedicated to design enhancements and optimizations for our current product offerings, addressing a wide range of customer needs and driving improvements in cost and performance.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

As the Mechanical Engineering Lead within the Sustaining Engineering team, you will oversee the daily operations of a team of 8-10 design engineers, focusing on the enhancement of our core products, from Clean Diesel to Battery Electric buses. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Guiding the development of designs and ensuring the creation of procurement-ready drawings.
  • Maintaining and managing Bills of Material (BOMs) effectively.
  • Facilitating clear communication within the team and prioritizing workloads to align with strategic objectives.
  • Driving innovations and improvements across product lines while resolving technical challenges in various operational areas.

TECHNICAL FOCUS

The Sustaining Engineering team is tasked with developing new options and performance enhancements for existing products, while also addressing technical issues across Supply Chain, Production, and Field operations. This role requires a diverse technical skill set, with responsibilities spanning chassis and powertrain design to passenger space considerations. Familiarity with HVAC systems is advantageous.

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Lead a team of engineers, ensuring alignment with company goals and contributing to the evolution of GILLIG buses.
  • Mentor and coach team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
  • Oversee the lifecycle of prototypes from concept through testing, upholding GILLIG's standards of excellence.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on production and quality challenges, ensuring compliance with stringent design requirements.
  • Adapt designs based on customer feedback, ensuring our buses meet high standards of efficiency and comfort.
  • Enhance product reliability and safety through meticulous design processes, including FMEA and GD&T.
  • Influence production processes by engaging in Change Control, facilitating the introduction of new designs.
  • Collaborate with experts to integrate cutting-edge technologies into our product lines.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or Physics.
  • At least 8 years of engineering experience.
  • Design engineering experience is essential.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting, CAD software, and project management tools.
  • Strong foundation in engineering principles with a proactive approach to innovation.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and the ability to guide others in basic structural FEA.
  • Understanding of the automotive industry, particularly heavy-duty applications.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying complex engineering concepts.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and occasionally kneel or squat.
  • Standard start time: 7:00 a.m. (negotiable).

EXPECTED COMPENSATION

$75,000 - $275,000 annual salary + premium benefits
