General Overview

The University of Texas at Austin is looking for a Mechanical Engineer Project Manager III (PM3) with a professional engineer license to join the Infrastructure Team within the Planning, Design and Construction department. The Project Manager will lead and manage significant infrastructure projects, both major (≥ $10M TPC) and minor (< $10M TPC), at UT Austin, focusing on technically complex and mission-critical initiatives. This role is essential for the effective execution of over $2 billion in ongoing projects in various phases of design and construction.

Role Purpose

To provide expert project management for engineering design and construction projects, including new builds, renovations, and upgrades to existing facilities and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Exhibit strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills while delivering exceptional service to meet client expectations and university standards.
  • Oversee planning, coordination, and execution of electrical construction and renovation projects, guiding project teams toward successful outcomes. Mentor junior project managers to foster professional growth and project success.
  • Ensure clear and timely communication among all project stakeholders, including clients, service providers, university staff, and contractors, to maintain comprehensive project documentation.
  • Assist in defining project scope, budget, and timelines for multiple concurrent projects. Monitor project budgets and schedules, providing reports as necessary.
  • Manage procurement of services from Professional Service Providers (PSPs) and construction teams, including agreement administration and risk identification with mitigation strategies.
  • Stay informed on relevant legislation, building codes, materials, and university design standards.
  • Maintain awareness of safety regulations, adhering to OSHA standards.
  • Engage in departmental committees and initiatives aimed at enhancing service delivery and project execution.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer license (PE) in Texas or eligibility for reciprocity.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in project management for engineering design and construction.
  • Familiarity with contract documents, construction bidding, and negotiation processes.
  • Knowledge of life safety and building codes, including NFPA 101, IBC, ASHRAE, IECC, and ADA.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and project scheduling software.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Relevant education and experience may be considered as appropriate substitutes.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 10 years of experience in the engineering sector.
  • Experience managing projects in a higher education environment as the owner's representative.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification or similar formal project management training.
Driving Requirements

This position requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The selected candidate must provide a current three-year driving record. If not a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained promptly upon residency.

Salary Range

$115,000+ based on qualifications.
