Position Title: ITINERANT EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Supervised by/Reports to: Principal

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Objectives:
  1. As an Educational Support Specialist, your role will be to assist the primary educator in achieving daily educational goals. You will support school staff in delivering an effective learning experience for students with disabilities, focusing on their personal, social, behavioral, functional, and academic development.
Qualifications:
  1. Associate Degree or two years of higher education or successful completion of the work keys assessment, required.
  2. Experience working with students with disabilities is preferred.
  3. Ability to manage dependent students, if necessary.
  4. Understanding of academic and behavioral strategies to facilitate student learning.
  5. Proficient in word processing and computer skills.
  6. Strong interpersonal skills are essential.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Under the guidance of a certified educator, perform instructional tasks.
  2. Support identified students in maintaining behavioral control and implementing necessary plans.
  3. Work with small groups to reinforce concepts introduced by the teacher.
  4. Guide study sessions and corrective instruction as directed by the educator.
  5. Assist in implementing activities prescribed by speech, occupational, or physical therapists.
  6. Provide support to students requiring special attention and assistance.
  7. Help prepare instructional materials for classroom use.
  8. Assist with routine clerical tasks such as grading assignments.
  9. Support the teacher in feeding, positioning, lifting, or moving students, if required.
  10. Assist students with personal hygiene routines, including cleaning and changing, if necessary.
  11. Help students and/or educators with the use of assistive/adaptive devices, if needed.
  12. Supervise students participating in special or general education classes.
  13. Assist with additional duties related to student supervision during lunch, recess, study hall, cafeteria, bus duties, assemblies, field trips, etc.
  14. Accompany students to and from special education settings and regular classrooms as required.
  15. Perform other job-related tasks as assigned by supervisors.
Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and use hands to manipulate objects, equipment, or controls. The employee frequently must communicate verbally and audibly. Occasionally, the employee may need to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, carry, and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this role include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Compensation: Salary will be determined by the Alabama Department of Education's salary schedule.

Employment Terms: 182 days
