Job Title: Director of Philanthropy

Defenders of Wildlife is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Philanthropy to join our team. As a key member of our Development department, you will be responsible for cultivating and soliciting major donors to support our mission to protect wildlife and their habitats.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive major gifts strategy to meet annual revenue goals
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors, including personal visits, events, and correspondence
  • Qualify and recruit new major donors, including individuals and family foundations
  • Work closely with the Senior Director of Philanthropy, Vice President of Philanthropy, and Development operations staff to achieve fundraising goals
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of major donors, including setting goals, evaluating results, and developing new approaches as needed
  • Prepare progress reports and funding proposals for select major donors
  • Collaborate with volunteer hosts, Development staff, and regional staff to coordinate donor cultivation events and field trips
  • Engage and support senior management, program staff, and Board members in executing donor strategies
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in a related field
  • 10 years of relevant experience, including 5 years of supervisory experience and 5+ years of experience in major gift donor cultivation and solicitation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and concisely
  • Strong analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to function independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work well under pressure and tight deadlines, with a strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks effectively
