The Role
This position within the Assistant Mechanical Engineer series encompasses a range of professional mechanical engineering responsibilities related to the design, construction, and evaluation of mechanical systems and facilities.

Position Levels
The Assistant Mechanical Engineer Level I serves as an introductory role, aimed at the recruitment and development of individuals who do not yet meet the qualifications for the Level II position. Initially, tasks are performed under close supervision, gradually allowing for increased autonomy as experience is acquired, ultimately leading to promotion to Level II upon successful completion of training.

The Assistant Mechanical Engineer Level II represents the first professional level in this classification. Individuals in this role are expected to work with a higher degree of independence compared to Level I.

Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering principles and practices applicable to the design, construction, inspection, operation, maintenance, and enhancement of public works installations, including water supply systems and wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Familiarity with computerized control systems and instrumentation.
  • Awareness of relevant building codes and safety regulations.

Core Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical systems and installations.
  • Review engineering plans and specifications.
  • Estimate project costs and conduct cost analyses.
  • Prepare technical documentation and reports.
  • Inspect mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Foster effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Oversee and direct the work of others as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
Assistant Mechanical Engineer (Level I)
Either:
  1. Graduation from an accredited Mechanical Engineering program.
  2. Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

Assistant Mechanical Engineer (Level II)
One year of relevant mechanical engineering experience, or a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering may substitute for the required experience. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following:
  1. Graduation from an accredited Mechanical Engineering program.
  2. Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

Licensing Requirements
A valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher, is necessary prior to appointment.

Certification Requirements
Some positions may require incumbents to complete a year of verifiable experience in the relevant field and obtain certification from a recognized association within a specified timeframe.

Probationary Period
The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.
