The Position

We are seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Mechanical Engineer Level I/II.

Salary Information

Level I - $6, $7,278.42/Month

Level II - $7, $10,135.50/Month

Position Overview

Positions within this classification series are responsible for performing a range of professional mechanical engineering tasks related to the design, construction, and evaluation of mechanical systems and installations.

The Assistant Mechanical Engineer Level I serves as the entry-level position in this series, aimed at recruiting and training individuals who do not yet meet the qualifications for the first working level (Level II). Initially, work is conducted under close supervision, but as experience is gained, the incumbent will exercise greater independence and receive less detailed oversight until they are functioning at the first working level and can be promoted to Assistant Mechanical Engineer Level II.

The Assistant Mechanical Engineer Level II represents the first working level in this classification series. Incumbents are expected to operate with increased autonomy compared to Level I.

Knowledge and Skills Required

Knowledge of:
  • Fundamentals and practices of mechanical engineering as they pertain to the design, construction, inspection, operation, maintenance, and enhancement of public works installations such as water supply systems, wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, and public buildings.
  • Computerized control systems and instrumentation.
  • Relevant building codes and safety regulations.
Skills to:
  • Design mechanical systems and installations.
  • Review engineering plans and specifications.
  • Estimate costs and conduct cost analysis.
  • Compose technical reports and correspondence.
  • Inspect mechanical installations and equipment.
  • Foster effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Delegate and oversee the work of others.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Assistant Mechanical Engineer (Level I)

Either: 1. Graduation from an accredited Mechanical Engineering program.

Or: 2. Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

Assistant Mechanical Engineer (Level II)

One year of mechanical engineering experience (experience equivalent to an Assistant Mechanical Engineer (Level I) in Sacramento County service meets this requirement); (a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering may be substituted for the required experience).

And:

Either: 1. Graduation from an accredited Mechanical Engineering program.

Or: 2. Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

License Requirement: A valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher, is required prior to appointment to all positions in this class series.

Certification Requirements: Some positions in this class series may require incumbents to complete one year of verifiable experience in the appropriate field, and one year thereafter, to obtain certification from a recognized state, national, or international association, as determined by the County.

Probationary Period

The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.
